Sabriel Demo 1

Update: I tweaked the eventing to see if it would help stop the glitch. I didn't upload it as a gamedisc so that if it isn't fixed, you can just start from the saved file and it should be ok. You miss Sabriel's all-growed-up intro, but at least you should be able to make it through the whole thing. I recomend saving frequently, as other events might end up causing errors too (but I hope not).

Anyways, hope you can enjoy the whole thing now :thumb: !

"Does the walker chooses the path or the path choose the walker?"

Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life -- and comes face to face with her own hidden destiny. . .

This is the first demo of my game based off of the novel Sabriel (First in the Abhorsen Trilogy), by Garth Nix. I have been working on it on and off for about two months now, and I think it is very good for my first RMXP creation. It uses a lot of RTP edits and a few original graphics, and some sounds that I made. It doesn't use any custom scripts though, because I don't know very much scripting yet. I'm saving that for when I work more on my original game: "Lost Warriors".

So far there is not too much to the game story-wise (it's only the beginning), but there is a lot of side quests and extras that I've added, some hidden. If you do most of them, it should take you about 45 minutes to an hour to complete the demo, especially if you have to look for them. However, it will be pretty short if you skip them.

It would be nice if anyone who plays this demo can give me feedback about it. I haven't played any other games made on RMXP yet, so I can't particularly compare it to any other games, but tell me what you think!

Also, if you find any typos or bugs tell me (I have fixed all that I've found, but there could be a few more out there).

The file is about 4.21MB

No to offend, but given how this topic has no info about the game or the novel, I don't think many people would play it (or at least for me). You should make up a good topic thread showcasing the story behind the novel, show off some screenshots and just get people interested right off the bat.

I would post some screenshots, but I don't know how to get them. I guess I can say a little about the story. Thanks for the advice!

Here is how to get screenshots: look for a button on your keyboard that says: "prt scr" press that while playing, go to like a paint program and paste. =)

oh! i loved that series! i think its really cool that ur making a game of the book, but be careful. You don't want to get into a copyright fight. I'll definantly try out ur demo.

Yeah, I asked if it was ok to post this game before I did because of that. They said it was ok, as long as I don't intend to make mony off of it, which I dont. Anyways, it really is no different than someone making their own FF or Pokemon fan game, which I've seen alot of.

And thanks The_JSTREET. I'm pretty new here, and didn't know the rules about bumping. But then again I have added to the game since it was origionaly posted, since it used to be broken, and I never made a post about that. According to the rules, that would be ok, I think.

Although I'm a bit skeptical of how well you can do the story of Sabriel with the RTP graphics, you've obviously put a great deal of work into this, and it's a truly amazing story. I'm downloading it now. I'll be sure to put a mini-Nix-review in here when I'm done. ;)

EDIT: NIX'S REVIEW:

Asides from some small little map problems [usage of the dreaded canopy tile in the river, sparseness in the clearing where the travellers are camping), you've done an excellent job adapting Sabriel into a game. Unfortunately, the game errored up after Abhorsen [the original one ;-) ] revives Sabriel, but I saw enough. As for suggestions (if you'll take them), I'd find some different music for some of the scenes: although the RTP actually lent itself surprisingly well to what I saw of your game, there are doubtless several parts where you'll need some non-RTP music to set mood. Sabriel has a few too many dark parts to rely on RTP alone.

All in all, though, a good, solid piece. To any RMXPers reading this topic, don't let the RTP fool you: this is a topic to watch.

Yes, I've done alot of edits to the RTP as you might see, to make some of the characters, such as Sabriel, look more like their descriptions. In the future I will run into problems with the graphics, like with making army trucks...and the paperwing might be a hassle too, but I just need to find a good spriter to help me with this. I have also had to, and will continue to slightly alter little bits of the story that will be hard to do with sprites and RMXPs graphics. Nothing much, just character interactions and stuff. I also have tried to make things more interesting, like the river of death. If it looked as it it described in the books, it would be very boring and empty in a top-down RPG. Nothing but endless water. As you can see, my primary goal of this game is to simply make a game that the fans will be pleased with, and at the same time, an enjoyable RMXP creation. I hope you like it so far!

You are correct, but just to keep you in the safe you should post that you updated. If they report a post that just says "Bump" then you're likely to get a warn.

Uhg! I will have to try to fix that glitch again! I think it's just a problem with my RMXP or something. I don't know why. To that point is not even half of the demo, in fact that part only took me a couple days to complete. The rest of the work was put into Wyverley College.

I don't think I encripted the gamedisk, so you might be able to open up the file and skip a little, but play the rest. Try putting the start location on the "Outside Wyverley" map near the bottom, one space above an event that should show a bunny. If this doesn't work, I guess I'll have to do something to the glitched spot and see if it will play right.

I thank you, Nix, for your compliments, and I write music, so I could put some more dark stuff into it (which I am very good at writing I might add). The problem is, my music is not midi, and I would want all the music in the game to sound like it came from the same source. So, in other words, I would have to do all of the music or none to meet my standards, and I only really want to do that for Lost Warriors. But I know what you mean, the RTP only has a few good songs that I like, the rest is too happy or bouncy.

The maps in the beggining were made before I was very good with the program, so the later maps look a bit better. Ive also made the game so far without any outside help (except the use of character maker to create two sprites, but my manual edits look better anyways). I didn't even have internet until two weeks ago! :)

Even though I am not using any new scripts yet, I am definatly a perfectionist in that I make sure the game is what I want it to be. If I can fix the demo, I will definatly re-upload it. The part that I want people to play and give feedback on is almost all after that error!

Thank you, and please, keep watching this thread everyone!

Those that want to play the whole demo should download the rar.

Please give feedback on the rest of the demo, especially if you are a fan of the book!
