I really need to play W40K eventually. It looks similar to WCIII but that could just be the graphics and races and such.

Eh? O_o its not similar at all to wc3. It's more similar to company of heroes than anything (which would make sense since they share the same engine).

DoW is completely different from WCIII, DoW primary focus is on combat, it only has two resources, of which the main one is acquired by capturing an holding "strategic points" on the map. And instead of single combat units, there are squads, so a 6 unit on 6 unit battle is a clash of armies, (up to even 10 or 11 soldiers per squad (unit) depending on what race you're playing)
