RPG Maker XP crashing

Hello, I have a question concerning the RPG Maker XP program. I have encountered what seems to be a bug with it, that causes the program to crash and lose any unsaved data when it occurs. I would like to know if anyone has encountered this bug before and if anyone knows why it only occurs sometimes and what, if anything, I can do, to keep it from happening in the future.

Bug Description: The only cause for it, that I can find, is sometimes, when I type the letter "j" into a Show Text box, in an event and then hit the F2 key on my keyboard, to display a sample of the entered text, to show how it will appear in the game. The program simply gives me an error message and then crashes when I close the error message window. Everything else becomes locked out, in the program, when the error message displays, so there is no way for me to save my progress when this happens.

I have tried every other letter, symbol and number, this only happens when I type the letter "J" into a text box and then press F2 to show a sample window of the text. This crash bug also randomly seems to fix itself for a while, as now I can't seem to get the program to do it again. I did not copy down what the error message said when the program last crashed, all I can remember of it was that it seemed to be a string of letters.

I have not added any new scripts to the program or changed it's default scripts in any way. So this crash bug is not being caused by anything like that.

Any help with this annoying crash bug would be greatly appreciated, thank you. I'm sure any other project designer would agree with me, one of the most irritating things to happen, when working on a project, is to have the program crash while your in the middle of making a lengthy event and then having to redo the entire event over again.

Well your OS could help to know. ALso this is the first time I have heard about this "bug" so are sure it is not something on your side causing it? Also if it happens quite offten you should have copied the Error Message. Also does it happen when you only type the letter "J" or type a complete sentence with the letter "J" in it?

My operating system is Windows XP. I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with my computer itself. This bug doesn't happen very often, this is only the second time I've encountered this bug in a few months while using RPG Maker. Once the error happens, I can cause it to happen again a few times but eventually, it simply randomly stops happening and I have no problem typing the letter "J" then in a text box and viewing it in a sample window. This is the most annoying part about this bug, I guess. Not knowing when it will cause the crash and when it won't.

If I remember correctly, this crash also only seems to happen outside of actually playing the game. Only when I use the F2 key to bring the sample text window up. If, for example, I choose to playtest the game and view the same text window in the game, the crash does not happen then. I have had a few people play test my game and they have reported no crashes or problems. So, I think whatever causes this is related to the sample text window itself, somehow.

The error does occur both when I use the letter "j" by itself as well as when I use it in a sentence. Both capital and lower case "J" can cause the crash to happen. I wish I had copied down the error message but I didn't. If it happens again I will be sure to copy down exactly what the error message says and post it on here. Thanks.

This only happens in the illegal version of RPG Maker XP. You pirated the wrong version, buddy.

Well, in that case, their own official website is selling pirated versions lol since that is where I got it from. But thanks so much for jumping to conclusions with me. I would ask how you know for a fact that this only happens with pirated versions--but then, the answer to that question seems obvious enough.

As a general rule, this bug has only been found in illegally translated copies of RMXP, such as the Postality Knight's Edition. It is a bug from the fact that they improperly translated the key input, as well as how the keys are displayed. If you have the legal version, you might want to try heading over to Enterbrain's website and downloading the version 1.02 patch, and installing it. If that fixes your issue, then all is well again.

Also, is your help file completely in legible English? How about the default scripts? If either of these things have illegible text, you might actually have an illegal copy of the program, instead of the official version from Enterbrain. Also, if you have a Japanese version translated by an English patch, that could also be the problem.

I think it's hilarious that this is exactly what everyone says when they're caught. "But I got it from Enterbrain's website!" Relax kid, the illegal postality knights (or RPG advocate translated) version was popular before Enterbrain started selling the game domestically so plenty of legitimate users have touched it at one point. If you searched deep enough you probably could have found tons of posts about the letter j issue in Illegal RPG Maker XP versions (google is your friend).

That's not the only potential issue, however. He could just as easily have a legal Japanese version with a translation patch applied, which might also be the source of the problem. The whole issue was the improper translation of portions of the program, after all.

Thank you, Glitchfinder, for the help. I did find and install the patch from the RPG Maker XP website and it updated my program version. I think I have seen it before but never downloaded it. I generally just prefer not to download anymore than I have to but hopefully this will fix whatever the problem was.

I have never noticed any illegible text in my help files for the program but then I haven't looked through every single help file for it either. Same goes for the scripts. I originally downloaded the free trial of it from download.com, probably... two years ago, at least. When the free trial expired and it prompted me to get the license for it, that is what I did. Since then, everything has worked fine pretty much, this has been the only bug I've ever encountered so far and I have rarely encountered it.

And, Diedrupo, I really don't care what you think. I know what I have and have not done and that's good enough for me. But please, keep calling me kid, it makes me feel younger than I am lol which is always a good thing. I only wish kids could type so well.

You're quite welcome. If the patch installed, that means that you had an older version of the program, which could possibly have had the same issue as the illegal copies. I certainly hope that fixed the issue for you. Anyway, have a good day.
