RPG Maker 3

RPG Maker 3 is the latest edition to the Playstation series of RPG Maker games.  It's greatest feature - excellent 3-d graphics.

The biggest problem - lack of customization.  They took out pretty much all customization features from previous RPG Maker games to make it easier to create.  There are usually 2 color sets for each character, with approximately 30 characters.  Also, the little things like each character could only be associated with a certain type of weapon, became extremely restricting.

Some good things it brought to the table were the field and dungeon editors.  It allowed the creator to make excellent fields and dungeons, although a similar feature for castles would have appreciated (castles only had 1 floor).  Animations were amazing and brought a certain brilliance when used correctly.

So, if you've played RPG Maker 3 or heard about it, what do you think of it?  I personally prefer the computer RPG Makers for their customization options, but the graphics are tempting sometimes.

Actually, it's pretty old. Also, it's shitty beyond belief.

RPG Maker 3 isn't BAD, per say.  There's actually a way to add custom content if you have a PS2 harddrive, and you can make pretty big games if you have one as well.  But... that's about it's only selling point, and if you don't have the harddrive, you're pretty well screwed.  I had bought it ages ago when it was new 'cause I was bought in by the "Oh, pretty".  Big mistake.

Truth: Any RPG Maker on a console system is utter shit.

Not true. RPGM3 may not be very flexible, but RPGM1 and 2 have a lot more customizablity, with 2 being the best. RPGM2 actually used to be my primary maker of choice (and it still happens to be one of my favorites). It may not have the prettiest graphics, but what it lacks in eye candy, it makes up in power. Check out these videoes of a game by a Japanese dude. The name of his game is License Hunter:

Pretty impressive, huh?  You can do almost anything that can be done with RPGMXP/VX technical-wise, only the scripting in RPGM2 is a lot easier (don't get me wrong; it's still pretty hard to learn, but once you get the hang of it, you'll see all kinds of different possibilities). I'm not saying that it's better than XP/VX (you don't have arrays/hashes or anything like that, though there are tricks that I've used to get around that), but it's still a very impressive tool.  :thumb:

Actually, I would still be using RPG Maker 2 if I hadn't had an error.  For some reason, my characters couldn't gain experience.  I tried the standard method and even forcing experience upon them, but for some reason it wouldn't go through.  I loved the map editor.  It gave so many possibilities for 3-d dungeons and castles.  It was certainly difficult to learn, though, just like RMXP and RMVX.  I had to use the walkthrough, and even then I had no idea how to get very far.  Now, I could probably make something very good since I understand everything better, but that experience issue keeps me from doing so.

I was surprised that they actually went a step back with RM3.  They had so many good things that they tossed away so even ten year olds can make a game.  That's good, but it's a horrible idea when you have someone older trying to make a custom game and who is unable to.  The battles in RM3 were so awesome, though.

Try pm-ing me the script. I'll see what I can do.

I was going nuts for this when I first heard it was coming out. Then luckily I stumbled on RMXP and I've been stuck on that or otherwise I'd be stuck plotting out mediocre games with RM3. The lack of customization killed whatever dreams I had of making the ultimate 3d rpg game.

I do and still have a place for the RPG maker on playstation. I recently played one of my own games there for inspiration to my RMXP games.

The lack of customization killed it.  You won't see a 3d Maker game with good customization any time soon simply due to the fact that 3d is 10x harder and 100x more time consuming to make plus most people don't know how.

At best maybe a Spore type of 3d modeling system.  But who would want a RPG game that looks like Spore?
