Router Help

As some of you in IRC may know, my router plain old sucks. It's so bad that I disconnect from IRC...a lot. Since I'm stuck with my current one, is there anyway to fix it? It's a Linsys WRT54G Wireless Broadband Router.

Side Note:When I first got it, I was able to play FF11 in the room on the opposite side of the house perfectly, now I even if I'm next to the router, I can barely stay connected, yet my mom can stay on AOL perfectly on the other side of the house. Could the problem be with my wireless card?

I'm sure there are people here with a same problem as you (but probably are using a different router).

My advice would be to contact Linksys Technical Support and try to delve to the source of the problem. Hopefully they can help you a bit better than people here :)

  • Here is the telephone number to their Technical Support : 1-800-326-7114 : which is available 24/7

I've called them. Many times. And all I've gotten are temporary solutions to the problems, since my cable services changes my IP adress like, every 12 hours. I'm looking for a permanent fix.

Then it might be a connection problem with your ISP, or the fact that you have a static IP.

As I tell everyone I come across with a wireless router, why have one? They pose a big security risk and are (most of the time) unreliable. I would just invest in an hardwired connection (i.e. coaxial cable with your standard cable modem). They are much more reliable even though you are sacrificing convenience.

EDIT: And I think I told you this on IRC too :)

Well, our main cable connection is near the main computer, and my mother is stubborn. It's been her spot since like...1995 when she played Solitare...all day long. And since I have a laptop, it's just better for it to be wireless, plus my dad needs the internet for work, and he's on the other side of the house. Basically, I'm stuck with wireless. It used to work flawless, but now it's just...bleh. But it works perfect for my mom's laptop.

Edit:I musta been having my weird things and my ghost was still there, cause I never heard you say that :P

If your mum uses a wireless card in her laptop, why snag it from her's and test it out in yours? If it seems to be working fine with her card and not yours, then that narrows down the playing field a bit don't you think? :)

Just make sure to ask permission.

Ok now, what other options do you think you have? What we know so far is:
  • That your connection is popping in and out.
  • The router you are using works fine in your mum's laptop, but not on yours.
  • She won't let you open up her laptop to test the card out on yours.
It sounds like a card problem through the process of elimination. Try to get yourself an internal card like hers (or similiar). If you are worried about installing an internal network card in a laptop, take it to a shop.

Ew...my parent's distrust online shopping :( I had to basically beg them just to get me RMXP. Anyways, can I find a good one at Fry's Electronics?

Fry's sells mostly refurbished/used computer parts, and in the past I have had problems with them. But I suppose it may of just been bad luck. It can't hurt to have a look around the store I suppose :)
