How do you feel about rom hacking? I'd ask what most people feel about rom usage in general, but most people love it.
If you're not sure, there's all sorts of rom hack type out there. Graphical hacks, translation hacks, level hacks, totally new games, etc etc. Does a good level hack make your old favorite a new game for you?
Personally, I love Super Mario hacks. I'm getting kind of tired of SMW hacks, because they're all getting kind of the same. ( a lot of hidden coinblocks and the like), where as SMB3 hacks like Mario Adventure, Some Usual Day, and the like, breathe new life into my favorite NES.
A few hacks even create all new games from the core programming. Dragoon x omega is a hack of Dragon Warrior 1 and its sequel a hack of Final Fantasy 1, both on the NES. Both completely new games with a new pallett, new graphics, story, all of that.
Would you consider rom hacking as a way to develop a game of your own? Granted, it would be hard to distribute, as it is illegal to distribute an actually rom. As far as I know, sharing the patch file is legal, while the actual patching probably is not.
So, what do you guys think? Rom hacking; do you like it, does it piss you off when someone messes with your favorite game, or do you think that overhaul hacks can make good, fun games?
