its not that I don't like mccain... Its just that Sarah Palin scares the living shit out of me.

Is anyone else this way?

These next four won't be a happy time for libertarians but Obama's still a saint in comparison to McCain (and will actually end up costing the U.S. LESS, it's estimated), so GOBAMA 2008-2012

plus what if mccain dies??? you want palin in the hotseat?!?! (you betcha!)

Palin can get in my hotseat anytime.

Libertarians basically believe in an extremely small government and an extremely free market. Taxes, according to them, either shouldn't exist, or they would be very paltry and small.

Many libertarians have differing opinions (like democrats or republicans), but the majority of them believe that the government should be split into smaller, community-oriented governments, like in the earliest years of the nation. There would be no "big government", we would be one unified country, whose laws and ideals are based entirely upon the will of the communities, rather than the whole (i.e. east Arkansas wouldn't allow gay marriage because the people wouldn't like it, but the people in San Francisco could have it however they want it). If there were taxes, the majority of it would be funneled directly into the taxpayer's community, rather than a large cache that no one can keep tabs on (i.e. like right now).

They generally lean rather on the liberal side in social and military issues.

But mostly they have financial issues, and focus most on the financial and business-related law aspects of governing. They believe in a free market and free trade, where the government's only authority is their enforcement of human rights, maybe minimum wage, and splitting monopolies (which would destabilize the free market). But the conservatism and liberalism about their ideas on what the govm't should and shouldn't do in regards to business varies wildly from Libertarian to Libertarian.

It (the Libertarian Party)'s a rather "new" party, only being formally recognized in the early 70's. Bob Barr is the current running-man heading the nomination for it. But since its inception it's become one of the strongest Independent parties.

That's it, in a nutshell, anyway.

The term "libertarian" obviously means that they believe that people should have liberty above all other principles. The market should be free, and so should the people. We should govern ourselves. And that's a possibility, but only with a small, decentralized government to handle the necessities (fire, police, etc). Charities and good will efforts would be handled via demand. If people care about cancer, they will donate to it, and so will businesses.

Most libs are anarchists at their core, so they're seen as sort of strange in the political world. A number of them believe in NO government at all, which obviously would NEVER happen.

I'm more of a conservative lib, adhering more to the idea of a "Minarchism", which is the small, destabilized govm't ideal.

Damn I need to stop now, I could go all night D:

Oh yeah, I get all wet and hot whenever we talk about Robert Nozick. It's like, damn, free market baby! Why? Why not, I tell thee! We should have as much liberties as possible, because we're all very reasonable, kind people. If parents decide to raise their children with whips and straps, they should be free to do so. This is a free country, by God! If you can't take care of yourself, I shouldn't be the one to do it! If you have three consecutive chromosomes, no family, no money, no way to gain money whatsoever, then I'll be damned if I ever give you a cent, you lazy bum! I worked for this! Never, never you hear me? I take care of my own little world, do so for yourself! If you can't, then that's just too bad! Incidentally, your kids are then also fucked, but that's none of my concerns.

Someone raise Nozick from the dead and push him as the figurehead of THE NEW WORLD ORDER! It's new, it's orderly, and it's FREE.

Actually, there's quite a number of Libertarians like me, who feel we shouldn't be taxed because it's unethical to "donate" our money to good causes for us. Let me choose where and how to donate, and if anything make it so America invests in those who invest in us. Go out and work at an animal shelter for a while, or a soup kitchen. It's not hard and it's an incredible pick-me-up.

I entirely agree with you. I mean, even if the government wasn't taxing us, I'd still donate money to good causes and help out whenever I can. Right? Who wouldn't do that! I certainly wouldn't want to leave this burden up to a minority, no no!

I didn't mean no taxes whatsoever, I mean I get to choose where my taxes go. I sense a bit of sarcasm here...?

There isn't much to debate anyhow. Usually, by their late twenties, everybody has found his or herself in one of the big two (communitarian or libertarian) and is unlikely to switch. Not that it can't happen. And not that neither of them can get along with each other, but the issues are usually pretty fundamental, and every time the debate narrows down to a set of opinions vs another.

I was being sarcastic just enough to hint that I'm very, very pro John Rawls, but maybe that's my Canadian backbone.

Anyhow, let's just stop here before the topic crashes beneath the combined weight of liberty and justice (for all, of course).

Oh yeah, and GOBAMA. This is the coolest shit that ever aired on CNN (except that O'Reilly factor skit with the guy whose father died at the Twin Towers and who wouldn't blame the Arabs and got the shit verbally kicked out of him).
