RMXP RTP Recolors (VX Color Style) (WIP)

(I'm sure a mod'll delete the first locked topic for me.)

I've been working on redoing the RMXP RTP Tilesets into a more, less pixelated, and less rough, style, similar to that of RMVX Tiles. Its a works in progress but I have one tileset done, as well as 9 Autotiles.

Here are some comparison shots.

Please post some feedback! And try em' out in RMXP to see a nice difference! I'll have some more finished by tomorrow!

It's too bright, hurts my eyes and it looks blurry. Please don't just adjust the hue, brightness and saturation on a tileset. Consider palette swap. Look at this for a while and tell me if you could play a game like this. If anything you should make the RTP darker.

Okay, this isn't really your fault because for some reason there isn't a rules sticky in this forum (I'm hopefully going to correct this soon) and I didn't tell you this before, but in the future, when a mod locks your thread, don't make a new one. Instead, PM the mod, figure out what the problem was and how to fix it, and then when you've revised your original post to the mod's satisfaction, s/he will reopen the thread. We don't usually delete threads, but I'll nuke the first one you made since there's no point in having two.

I'll respond to this more thoroughly later, but I really really have to study for a final now.

I had done a similiar thing with my entire RTP (charsets, tilesets, autotiles, etc), but mine actually looked really good, these ones look horrible and I'm sorry I have to say that, but they are... they radiate horribly, it looks like a nuclear accident. Perhaps maybe its the way you adjusted the contrast, or the way you did the brightness I'm not sure they just don't look good, and they definately don't have that *stand out* quality VX tiles have to XP tiles (reguardless the horrible mapping scheme).

I'll give you a pat on the back though due to the fact that the autotiles match up pretty good (from what I see anyway) but you're going to encounter problems with common autotiles VS different tilesets later on. With this, I'm going to give you a heads up you're gonna be doing alot of copying and pasting down the road, especially because you're going to have to doctor certain tiles and autotiles together in order for them to look right on all tilesets.

For instance, the common Grass autotile; you're going to have to cut out whatever is blended on top of the each grass autotile and use a common grass tile from ONE tileset beneath the Grass-type autotiles, then in turn repaste that same grass autotile over all tilesets which use a grass tile/grass autotiles otherwise they won't blend globally.

I'd highly advise you to scrap this one and try again, instead of making it 'glow' in a very bad way, you should find a way to make it look sharper and darker (without cheating and using the Sharpen feature), maybe spruce up the color. In other words, just start over dude this one looks really bad, and the entire RTP is going to prove to be more work than you'd think... don't dig yourself a hole too early.

Sorry I normally don't drop in to give very put-down feedback, but being as I've done this before I figured I should halt you before you get farther, unless you actually like the way it looks then ignore my ignorant nagging.

Actually, yes I know quite how difficult it is editing Tilesets and autotiles, which is why I am editing grid by grid, rather than a whole tileset at a time. Its very time consuming and may be a while before I get all of them complete, but I like the method I am using. As to the color, I personally like the vivid color much better than the original, but I agree that it does seem to look blurry, and actually has been screwing with my eyes as I've been playing. I made a fix that should fix that though... I'll update soon.

The really bright colors don't really bother me as much as the bluriness does. Did you use some sort of photo filter? I wouldn't suggest doing this if that were the case, especially if you are using photoshop. Photoshop's blur filters (unless you use surface blur) work by blending the colors in within a certain radius. What that means is, that eventually,  you will probably run into problems such as parts of one tile showing up in another. That'll become very frustrating for you and you may want to as someone early mentioned, come up with another method and start it over. All in all though, the map itself (despite the very little content in it) seems to be seamless from what I can tell. Still, fix the bluriness as soon as possible would be my largest recommendation.

You can do the entire tileset at once, but there are certain common tiles VS autotiles that may or may not turn out right and the new look in your post isn't very VX-ish, it actually looks kinda cartoony (and you could probably get that look by just changing the screen tone in your game). Here, I'll show you one of my edits...

Its not a significantly different look between before/after, but if you look at the trees and the fort you'll see that the After picture stands out better than Before, especially the building and the trees, its more VX looking.

My methodology : All my tilesets/autotiles were done with the same exact methods, 5 to 6 clicks on Contrast (+100 to +120%) and then 2 clicks on Brightness (-40%) in GraphicsGale. Still, I had to do the doctoring mentioned above for autotiles to look correctly with all tilesets, but it was very short 'n sweet and thats all I wanted.

Just showing you that if you're wanting to make your tilesets more VX looking, I hope this helps you some :thumb:

Ehmm..What can I say ? No idea to only change the hueof a tileset and then make a topic about it... (!?!?!) Try to edit your work more or own tilesets, dont chan´ge the hue to +2% brighter and make a topic of that...It`s not considered an own work :dead:
