RMXP Basics, for the beginners

I made a project in RMXP a while ago to introduce beginners to RMXP. The basic idea was to teach people how to make a game without confusing them. Though I only have part one finished, I figured I would post it here to help out beginners, and to get ideas for the next part.

Basics of RPG Maker XP
Mirror 1

This tutorial walks you through the basics of making a game in RMXP. There are four sections: Introduction, Mapping, Events, Database. In each of these sections, I only offer the basic knowledge.

In the Introduction, I simply introduce myself, the main hero, and the tutorial.

In the Mapping section, I show the GUI of RMXP and show people how to map properly, assuming they know how to drag and drop already from previous computer experience. I show how to use layers and transparency properly from the RTP tilesets.

In Events, I show how to place an event, how to get it to talk, and how to respond with choices. Toward the end of this section, I introduce basic quest design.

For Database, I didn't do much, since most of that is rather complicated for a beginner. Instead, I showed how to change the graphic of the hero to whatever you wanted and introduced each tab.

This is meant to be a tutorial for people that have NEVER used RMXP before, but have used a computer before. As such, I don't walk people through the basics of running a computer, like dragging or double clicking. As such, the player/creator must learn a few steps on their own. If you remove all thoughts from the project, you remove their ability to learn, after all.

For those that missed certain steps in the tutorial, the save feature was slightly altered to work as a chapter skip. It will skip you to that chapter, but the tutorial will continue from their, so be prepared to shut down the program or hit the reset button if you don't want to see anything past what you missed. I think it's F12, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, I hope you guys have fun making games in RMXP. I'll see about getting the next tutorial out soon so that you can work with some of the other features, like battling. ^_^

Not even trying it? If you'd like more info, trying it would be the best way to go!

Fine...

This tutorial was made in RMXP, so you obviously need to have RMXP to use it.

It goes through three different sections of basics, Mapping, Events, and the Database. The tutorial gives you basic knowledge on how to make your first map, and briefly introduces changing your hero.

All of this can be gained from using it, if you aren't lazy. And, sorry about being a bit testy, but it's a bit annoying when the first person to comment on something you made refuses to try it because you didn't meet their expectations in the post! I don't mind someone telling me that I need to post more info, but you don't have to act stuck up about it.

I cant get it, I click the link and after a few seconds it says "404 Error: Can not find host" So get a new mirror ASAP! And this is my first post, hello. Sorry for going off topic.

Odd... Site Sled must be down... =/

I'll find another one, give me a minute...

Alright, the file now has a mirror site up. If that doesn't work, for some reason, let me know and I'll try another one.

The link worked, and I tryed it, but... it was to simple for me, it taught me nothing. It was good, I liked how you used images from screens. I had hoped you would tell me what the black arrow was for, I dont even know. At first I though it would be the place where the text would start to go off screen but nope. The tut was GREAT other than the fact it taught me nothing. And why did you put that "Z" over the "S" on the Skills tab?

lol

Think of it kinda like an Easter Egg. It was a quick joke for those who understood it. ^_^

Yeah, the tutorial is purely for the beginners that know next to nothing. You install the program, can't figure anything out, then watch this.

The zip file needs to be open in a program that can handle it, like WinZip or WinRAR, both of which are free (or, free enough). After you extract thew EXE file, you open that and tell it the location you wish to install the program to. After that, if you have already installed RMXP onto your computer, you should be able to just open the 'game.exe' file, where you installed it, and it will play as it should.

Oh! Yeah, I'll try to include that in the next download. For now, just do a search on Google for that exact file name and download it into the program's folder. That should do it.

The black arrow is basicly a guide to tell you where you should stop typeing... also instead of going into game to test the text you can simpley press F2.. Hope this helps you with your tut..

That does help. This has actually given me some material for the next part, especially since I am going onto the next step of events right now.

Thank you.

Np its for my people *cough* Just say cheeze once in your next thing =D cuz then i feel special lol.. Lo jk. * cough not cough *

I'm gonan try it to see how you work...

Ithink everyone ment that you have to put more info in the ORIGINAL POST, no post again. dont make useless posts.

And use spoiler and coler text, they attract more.!

Yeah, but he was the only one to inform me, and did it in a rather rude way.

I'll get to it in a sec. And, I had noticed that colorful text and spoilers are like shiny things to a cat. ^_^

Very informative, yet entertaining tutorial. It's an excellent way to demonstrate the program. It must have taken some time to get it working just right.

Not really. It was a simple ABC project. This next one I'm working on is a bit more complicated than that, but it's intentional, so the player has a better understanding of the tutorial, and the people who take it apart will have one of those "oh, yeah" moments.

ok thats useful but i n longer need it i go to delete it and it wont let me i deleted the contents of the folder but the file wont go away

any ideas?
