Revolutionary War Character

I've been trying to make a revolutionary war character for awhile, I even posted for help on the request thread but I am still having trouble. Here is my third attempt, its a lot better than the others but I feel there is still something wrong...

Is it for the US Revolutionary War? I think it looks fine, but I'm wondering if the yellow X across its chest is part of the jacket or straps to something on its back?

Well, round the "X". It looks flat and straight. Add some shading to it.

Personally, I think the straps are fine. But the hat? No.

Well the straps in the reference picture I used were actually holding the guy's gun powder satchels or whatever at his sides, but when I tried to put them on my character it looked dumb, so now I am just planning to have them securing a rifle on his back.

Urmm... First and 3rd? I dunno. Hard to say. This is mostly based on the strap blended more rather than the 2nd and 4th.
