Region V demo v1.0 is here!!!

title.png

Story: Mankind is always trying to figure out ways to make things better, especially the scientists.  After a human colning expirement goes horribly wrong the scientists built a prision of sorts to contain all their mismatched creations.  The prision was divided into 5 different regions filled with enemies, puzzles, traps, and even miscommunications designed to keep the problem away from humanity...that is until Footman and Hamperman arrive.  Take this dynamic duo on an adventure across plains, deserts, and even a supermarket.  Find the tokens and badges and uncover the secrets of...Region V.

Characters:
footman.png
Footman - The main charater and a clearly ruined expiriment.  You must hop around blasting fire from your red-hot nose and using your surprisingly intelligent mind to solve the problems that await you.
hamperman.png
Hamperman - No one is really sure how this happened but the story goes that one of the scientists decided to use the cloning device as a washing machine, the rest is history.
omar.png
Omar - While this character looks human enough, his obiesity disallows him from walking very far and he relies on his cheekflabs to get the job done.  Omar is available in the full version of the game.
slip.png
Slip - Bound by the same rules you are, this character is in charge of the gates, operating the opening and closing of their ajar mechanism and ensuring the...safety...of those who enter by him.

Game elements:
Region Tokens:  These are your holy grail of the game.  Region Tokens are used to open new worlds via the gates and are the direct means of game progression.  Region Tokens are collected in a variety of ways.

World Types:  There are 3 types of worlds in Region V:  Battle, Puzzle, and Social.  In Battle worlds your primary objective is to hunt down the Region Tokens, one of which will be secured by defeating all of the enemies in that world.  You also receive a Battle Badge for defeating the world boss.  Puzzle worlds rely on your ability to think outside the box, or in some cases just solve a giant maze.  For running the gauntlet to the end you are awarded a Puzzle Badge.  Social worlds take on a lighter note and focus the gameplay on completing missions and tasks for other characters.  A Social Badge is your reward for completing them all.  It's also fun to note that some worlds can have more than one type applied to them (e.g. Battle/Puzzle)

Battle:  The battle system in Region V takes on that of a classic RPG Maker XP style.  You have the option to attack or us a special skill to defeat your foes.  Enemies come in all flavors and strengths/weaknesses, so it's your job to keep yourself well equipped for the journey.

Palmy:  This helpful little palm tree will allow you to buy and sell items and equips along your adventure.  Find him in a world to get a boost in inventory.

The rest:  I hope you have fun playing this game and I hope it is something you will look forward to.  I am trying to use a little RTP as possible and you will see less and less of it as the game production continues I promise ;)

:: THE DEMO ::

Region V demo v1.0
---At this time RTP is required to play---

Oh god.  All the screenshots look pretty good but Screenshot 1 is BAD.  Not only is it RTP, but its badly-mapped RTP.  Fix it!!

Other than that, it looks pretty funny and entertaining.  Keep up the good work.  I may or may not download the demo later.

Thankyou for your reply Xephyr, that's all I'm asking at this point xD  I do encourage you to play the demo a little and see what I've come up with.  It's a colorful game that is about as far from traditional as you can get.  Check it ;)

This just looks weird, man. I'll check the demo out for you, dude.

EDIT: Remove those quotes from the link. I get a 404 because of them.

Oh by the way, anyone that tests this game demo and comments on it will have their name in the credits of the full version :)

Why is it that this is the only topic here that has no new posts?  Can I just get ONE PERSON to try this game out and give me feedback?  I put a lot of work into it and I'm not standing by and watch it go to crap >:/

I played the demo and was impressed with the direction of gameplay you are taking, but the poor mapping and overall rushed feel ruined it for me.

I'm glad you liked the gameplay aspect, that was the focus really.  I guess I'm not the best mapper, but I'm interested in what you mean by 'rushed' :)  Thanks for the feedback, you're in the credits now ^^

It seemed to me that you didn't put the best focus on the dialogue, and could have done more to spruce up the battle system. Maybe try to introduce a side-view battle system, or maybe even an ABS would work for a game like this.

Ah yes, the dialogue. Well I can tell you that there is a lot of planned dialogue missing for proof of concept purposes. I'm not a fan of too much dialogue myself (I think most people just skip it because they want to play), but I know there's a lot omissing that drives the story. As far as battling goes, I'm probably keeping it the way it is for 2 reasons. a) I like it better and 2) I don't feel like learning that much ruby, even though I'll have to make the custom menu that tracks the game's progress.

Any other thoughts from anyone? Kind of hard to shape a game around 2 opinions xD
Thanks Mundane :)

You don't need to learn Ruby to put in a new battle system, you just need to know how to use the Search feature of this website and you'll find anything and everything. Were you unaware that you there were third party scripts available to you?

If you need some help with the menu, I can oblige. I am no expert at RGSS, but I can throw down some really good graphical menus and stuff.

Well, I'm basically looking to make a menu option that displays your game progress, i.e. the key items you've collected and how many you've gotten against the total number in the game, similar to most adventure games like Banjo Kazooie and DK 64, just not as fancy.

Yeah, it's as simple as adding a window that shows some strings and variables(depending on if you are using variables to track these things).
