References for Job Application

Alright, it's my first time filling out a job application (yeah, first job) and for references (I'm going with personal sense it's my first time).

The problem I have is; I need someone I know for at least five years. I don't really have anyone usable that I know for five years. Would it be a bad thing to list someone you knew for two years?

Again, first time doing this so don't laugh ':|

Couldn't you try a teacher or a professor? Just a suggestion, I'm not sure myself, but it's one way to start. If you've kept in touch with teachers etc. they could be reference. Again though, I'm not sure.

Good luck though. ^^;

Depends on what type of job you're applying for. If it's a high corporate business job they will probably check up with all references, however if it's just a job to get you some extra change in your pocket, I see no problem with putting a reference of someone you only knew for 2 years. Best of luck.

Employers are more concerned with WHAT your references have to say about you, rather than how long the two of you have known each other. As long as they have enough material that'll allow your prospective employer to build a somewhat decent picture of you, you should be fine.

Employers rarely take the time to contact the references you list. They just want to see whether or not you abide by the application requirement. Of course this doesn't apply to those jobs that require extensive background investigations...etc...disclaimer...you get the jist of what I'm trying to say.

If you are wondering why employers ask for references (non-relative) is so they can establish a base of character for the prospective employee.

EDIT: I forgot to answer the question...teh hee. Honestly, if you do not have any valid references (five years or more), then use the next best thing. It's always better to put something than nothing at all.

My employer called all of my listed references (6 or so).

Anyways, former employers are a good one. Teachers, Leaders of Volunteer Organizations, anything you've done a long term commitment for with regards to a professional intent.

Is it wrong to have people (references) lie for you?

I may have done it in the past.

I'm a little worried that you would even have to ask that question...
