.rar files

How should I handle .rar files? Is there a specific location I have to save them in? Is there some program I need to download. I keep getting the error message "Unexpect file type".

I have downloaded the RTP and I have a legal copy of RMXP.

First off, google-ing 'rar file type' would've solved this almost immediately...

But this: http://www.rarlab.com/ is probably what you want. It's free, but after 30 days it'll start popping up a little 'BUY IT' message that you can just close (semi-annoying, but nothing much for the casual user). I'm sure you could find something else, but this is just the 'everyone does it' thing.

Depending on if you have a zip extractor program, and which one, you can set them up to extract rar archives as well. Personally I use winrar for all my archive needs, and prefer .rar's over .zip's. But Andy gave you everything you need, really.

Personally, I don't like RAR. You can open them with the shareware WinRAR, or the Freeware IzArc. There's also the OpenSource 7zip.

debate over whether .rar is better than .zip, and vise versa.
lol.. only on the internets...

alzip is my favorite, because if you use it to make a new folder, it gives it a bird name :}

Actually, I've had something pretty close, except it was RAR and LZH.

I use Winrar as well, but I have a question about it;
It does give me the "buy it" message, but all it says is that you are required to not use it unless you choose to buy it. Would it be illegal to keep on using it, even though it is giving you this message?

I understand rmxp's firm stance on piracy and illegal activity, and I'm curious as to whether or not this course of action is illegal or not. That, and if it is, why a mod would condone this behavior.

Just curious.

Because you feel the need to try and point out a flaw? I don't honestly know at all, winrar is just the 'standard' of people to use, not what I use.

EDIT: oh and I don't care to look it up at all, you're on a high horse, use your added height to search out the answer yourself.
