Your right but at the same time you proved my point. Hip-hop is a culture. hip hop is a art. Sure rap is a branch of hip-hop. But at this point it has fallen so far off the tree that in my opinion being a emcee and a rapper are two different things.
I didn't prove your point, because all you said was, that hip hop is art and rap is not. Which I think is wrong, because hip hop is a way of life so to speak and rap is one of its art forms. And yea maybe it did go a more seperate way now, not sure. After all they are all rappers, its just a differentiation among different genres within, same with rock music, where you have punk rock, glam rock, psychadelic and what not. So yes I would put Nas and Souljaboy in the category, but again, that's just me xD
I really don't like but thats not because of the music.. I have no real probleme with that (neither with the lyrics) or something.. I just can't listen trough a song because of the... well rapping. the talking instead of singing is something that just isn't for me . (though I got to say some rap songs have fine lyrics)

Anyway, time for some more detail.
I personally am a die hard oldschool hard rock'n'roll fan, Van Halen, Aerosmith, GNR, Lenny Kravitz, Queen, The Doors, Led Zepplin and the like.
Half of them were total druggies (point, point at Aersomith, Led Zepplin and The Doors)
Hip Hop/Rap and Rock both send out the same messages, it's just the delivery that is different.
IMO this just hit the nail on the head
but then fayte strikes off in to the distance with his explanation
People that are into rock will probably say something like hip hop is too "gangster" or "all they talk about is shooting and bitches" and people that like Hip Hop would probably say something like rock is too "noisy" or "all they talk about are their ex's and suicide".
The difference between the two genres isn't within the lyrics, many rappers have perfectly good ones (such as Eminem for instance) The difference in delivery is the music. Rap follows a simple structure, (hopefully) poetic lyrics said really fast with an overbearing beat. There are several problems, often the lyrics are indistinguishable because of the speed their said at and the repetition (the human mind reads patterns, when they remain the same we tend to blend them and get annoyed This:
sing the same tile and just changing the shades looks horrible:
Do not, I repeat do NOT do this. I guess I should explain why exactly...other than the fact that it really looks ugly, heh. A big problem is the repetitive texture. It's the exact same design with different colors. Now imagine the old days, when an engine scrolled not by pixel, but by jumping tile to tile (16 pixels with each press of a direction). Now what would happen is when you're going along, since the tiles wouldn't scroll, they'd just be replaced instantly by the next tile in the direction you're going. This demonstrates the problems with using the same tile with color swaps, as say you were walking along that chunk of map in the above image...You could hold down the right direction and all you would see is the color of the tile change. No difference in the texture at all, and it gets boring and eventually hard on the eyes to differentiate between the different land types because you just focus on the pattern which looks the same. This same effect is noticeable if you've ever been walking on a large area of grass tiles that all look the same...You could hold down the key for an hour and never know if you're still walking or if you're bumping against the edge of the map and not going anywhere, because everything looks the same. Granted, this isn't as bad with a pixel scrolling engine, but the patterns STILL look the same and will bug the player.
applies to sound too), furthermore the beat is often way to piercing, and you just can't stand it. (just like you'd never play your lead chord with cymbals or a triangle *shudder*) Rock on the other hand is very melodic, (this is why I don't really like metal, IMO the screaming detracts from the melody) It has an actual tune, something you could hum to. (beat boxing isn't humming btw) This gives it an identity, something that differentiates each song from the rest, along with something you can consistently listen too (hence there are instrumental songs, but I've never heard of a lyric only song).
I also want to mention that rock, being a well established genre with very broad descriptors, has lots of variety, many sub-genres, and unique artists. But the real beauty is that it all clicks. If you really like one sub-genres, usually you can listen and enjoy almost all of them. I for example also absolutely love 60s Progressive Rock (Cranberries, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson) and Mellow Rock (Billy Joel, The Beatles), and for the criticism I have of it, I can listen to Heavy Metal, most notably Metallica, and Rammstein (but that's special because they don't scream excessively, and are more electronic) With all these different but enjoyable sub-genres you can constantly vary what you listen to, thus never becoming "bored"
Rap on the other hand is very monotone because of the very rigid structure that defines it as a genre
(hopefully) poetic lyrics said really fast with an overbearing beat.
This structure leaves little room for variation, and in practice the only thing that can have any variation - the beat is often painfully similar. Thus in its essence, rap without any major breakthroughs, can only ever be a fad.
and this concludes my paper, now I'm going to file it away in the essay section, in case this ever comes up in a prompt
Glad I found this topic, well i agree with everyone on that, the mainstream hiphop media is crap, with an exception here and there. hip hop is a big part of why most of americas all muffd up to me anyways, kinda destroying the family structure i think, thats a big part of my project actually
First and foremost, I love most all music and that ranges from Death Metal to Classical. I totally dig hop hop, the culture, the graffiti art, the break dancing, the sick sampled beats, the TRUE Emcee's who spit the real. Everything about it. But this rap crap and these rappers need to go. These mainstream dudes are ruining everything. All they do is talk about stuff that they have and you don't. And this autotune trend is.... ugh. Jay Z said it best. Rap raped hip hop, without a doubt. Another thing, no one can tell you what to do. I HATE when people hear the lyrics of a crappy rap song and then try to live by it. To me, that's cheating yourself. But, eh. I'll stop. I can go on forever about this... ha.

mainstream rap is terrible. Lil Wayne (self professed greatest rapper of our time) is utter garbage, his lyricist needs to be shot in the vagina.
Agreed. There are far better rappers out there in the underground who would blow Wayne beyond the water. Immortal Technique is simply one, but his stuff is kinda depressing at times. And I'll throw on some MF Doom for kicks.
There's meaningful, sensible Rap like Flobots and Kid Cudi, and then there's that gangster shit trash that is all yelling and cursing and is probably the reason why people want to go out and beat the shit out of people. Don't even get me started on today's shit--I mean, what the hell is Kanye still doing here? That's not talent, he just throws shit together and makes millions off of it. Music these days just isn't about quality anymore, it's just a way to make money off of stupid people who buy into that garbage.
if it sounds good it's good
that's all there is to music
i can listen to jpop, jrock, kpop, latin shit, spanish shit, french stuff, all that. do i understand anything? nada. do i still think it's good? yes.
i try to feel music from an objective angle- if the voice sounds good, if the rhythm and rhyme is there and exists, it's all good. if i can understand it, and it is poetic, even better, but it is in no way a necessity.
When rappers say the literal same shit over and over, not even phrased in something differnet (hey, superman, crank dat, i'm looking at you), that's when it actually gets boring. when the artist says i love you over and over again (hey every fucking song out there im looking at you) that's when it actually gets boring. the worse thing in rap is the repetition of things- the beat, the rythm of a song that doesn't change, etc. It can still be good- tha forementioned beautiful by eminem, for example. There's not that much rap in my collection, but i love the ones that are there.
