Quest for a Game Style

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v695/ ... age3-2.png[/img]

Hey there inhabitants of this fine rmxp forum, I am trying to settle for a style
for my game "Catastrophe" (as I have abandoned my previous catastrophe template)

Listed below are the different styles I've tried for the game, with examples.

I personally love version03.
but imho you've misplaced some shades which make the lines look jagged, and I also think the palette may be too saturated.

thanks green raven!
I am still quite new to some aspects of spriting, such as doing outlines. I
used this template and v2.0 to experiment with it, and personally thought
it turned out okay. Yes, some lines are jagged, and I'll try to fix it.

1) selout selout selout selout. USE SELOUT.
2) contrast- either you need more, or a bit less, depending on what you're going for. If you want higher contrast, or even something similar to what you've got now, please, by the gods have good color use.
3) shading of the hair seems haphazard at best. Pick a style and stick to it. What you've got right now seems to be a cross between plastic and realistic but with the worst elements of both together.
4) I REALLY don't like that shadow. This may just be pixel-purism, but it's got WAY too many colors. Simplify, my friend, simplify.
5) His arms are made of spaghetti.
6) Face is weird. Eyes and ears should be level.
7) Chest is weird.
8) Torso is weird. You know what, fuck it. Redo this thing ground-up with better anatomy.

Sorry I can't post a more indepth critique, but w/e.

Drift: Better shading. Don't just place pixels, think about WHY you're placing them there, and which ones you're using. The template is a noodleman. Shadow bothers me. Hair is hideous. Also PLEASE for the love of god selout or at least shade properly.

thanks for the critique, it's constructive (maybe a bit harsh, but constructive nonetheless)
I'll try to simplify it, maybe even just make a whole new template as a v4.0. I've never been
good at hair, grass, trees and those kinda things. I just have to keep practicing!

I have to disagree with gratheo.
Don't use sellout, and keep the somewhat disformed anatomy! This are stylistic choices which make the template or break the template.. The shading is really bad though.

Well, selout depends. If you're going for a more realistic style, AA and some mild selout, used properly, will help that. If you're going for cartoony, keep it simple. Neither method is an excuse to have spaghetti limbs, though. Refine those things until they have real structure. Proportions don't have to be perfect, but a body should be something more than a box, a head, and four limp noodles waving around at roughly limb level.

v3.1 looks preety decent. I would love to see this style of spriting in an RMXP game. But I think you should do it just a bit bigger unless you'r going to change the resolution of the game because the screen will look too big for such a small template.
