Putting variables in text?

How do i put a variable in the text on XP? I.E.: Soldier - you have collected 32 marbles so far.
Can I even do this without scripting?

I've never done that before, but I believe it's something like:
I've seen it done in a battle system demo.
"You have collected\[variable#] so far"

Again I'm not 100% sure, you can try it out yourself.
