PSIV: Beneath a New Light

Hi there everyone. I haven't been here in ages, so my project is a bit outdated. I'll start a brand new thread over here then.

My game cover. I drew the characters myself.

On with the introductions:

My game is basically a remake of the classic Genesis RPG, Phantasy Star IV: The End of The Millenium, but with a twist. For those of you who never played the Phantasy Star series or even IV, here's a WikiPedia link about the information of that game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasy_Star_IV

The twist in this game is that you will be seeing the game through the eyes of the game's original protagonist, Alys Brangwin. But due to her untimely demise in the original PS4, the protagonist became her student and partner, Chaz Ashley, who was annoying as hell. Many of the game's fans actually wanted Alys to be the main character, simply because she had a stronger role and a better personality. Well, I'm here to change that. And let's face it, there are very few strong, lead female characters in today's RPGs.

It basically follows the same premise as the original game, but with a lot more twists.

Here are a couple of screens to get the ball rolling.

Alys' hometown and capital of the desert planet, Motavia. The Hunter's Guild, where Alys works, is situated here.

Thanks to the Inquisitor for these gorgeous tilesets.

Many thanks to MogHunter for his awesome scripts. ^^

I'm using Atoa's Frontal Battle system. I'm having trouble finding a combination attack system though, or even a limit-break system that is compatible with this battle system...

I styled the menus myself as well.

The game uses manga stills to show key events.

There are no random encounters on the world maps. Those red dots represent the enemies.

I look forward to feedback, so I can discuss with you the finer points of the game.

you know i never got to play the original phantasy stars (just pso) but i will definetley give this a try, are you near completing a demo?

Also on the Equipment Menu you said you styled it yourself, are you talking about the graphics and if so what type of menu system is that? because i really want to create something similiar in my game with custom graphics like that. thanks

I've always liked the idea of NON random encounters on world maps thats definetely a good thing, the only thing that kinda looked outta place was the dome from the first screenie, other than that i look forward to the demo

All my menus are based off the Mog-Hunter's scripts. I am planning to release a 4+ hour demo of the game sometime in the future. It's around 80+mb in size. The completed game is around 14+ hours in length.

As for the dome on the first screenie, it was ripped from the original Phantasy Star 4, but I'll see if I can make a hi-res version of it. It does appear a bit pixellated, doesn't it?

I'm not clear on what you're planning to do. Do you intend to create a story wherein Alys does not die, but the events will at least roughly follow the original game's story, or are you planning to essentially create an all new tale; the story that would've happened had she lived?

The story is basically the same as the original, but with a few plot twists here and there. Also, the game also focuses on Alys' past relationship with Rune, which was never discussed in the original game, due to her untimely death, as well as her reasons for becoming a Hunter in the first place. These events are told through flashbacks or they are 'hidden'. I.o.w, you need to activate a certain event for the cutscene to play.

Features:

-A simple, yet effective, turn-based battle system that is fully animated. Credit goes to Atoa.
-Demo version of the game is around 4+ hours, full version clocks in at around 14 or so hours.
-Apothecaries which enable you to buy rare restorative items. Blacksmiths offer something similar with regard to weaponary and armour.
-Manga stills which show the major cutscenes in the game. There are around 20 or so of them, which amounts to about an hour of game time.
-Interesting and vivid playable characters. You gain access to a guy who has lived for nearly 2000 years, a cute girl with feline genes and a millenia old android are just some of the characters you'll encounter.
-Mog style menus.
-Multi-slot equipment. Credit goes to guilliaume777.
-Heatstroke on Motavia, the desert planet, and Frostbite, on Dezolis, the ice planet. These new status' will deplete your allies health until you can find the correct item to counter it. The Poison status does damage per battle step, and it will usually kill your allies if you don't cure it soon.
-A fully custom original soundtrack. Very few RTP songs are featured, but I'm getting rid of them slowly.
