PS3 games will play on all PS3's regardless of region.

PS2 games will only play from the region that they are from... so a NA PS3 will play NA PS2 games and JP PS3 will play JP PS2 games.

Seriously though... Is this worth a thread? And even if it is try to fill it out a little more :/

Awesome Bro

Camisado's right, I got a 60GB one and I'm from UK, it plays my PS2 games perfect, and it plays my friends PS3 games who got them from NA and even JP, so any PS3 Game will work on any region PS3, no problems about it.
You'd be better getting the NA one so the menus are in english, even though you can change it anyways, AND if your from NA, if your PS3 breaks, you can take it back for a new one and not wait like 2-3 weeks shipping all the way from Japan.

Woot all the way really.

There's not much difference. NA, EU, and JA PS3 games will work, as they all use BluRay Region A. It's not because of a lock out, or lack of one.

PS2 is a questionable one. So is PS1. If your PS2 still works fine and plays your NA games, but not any imports, then try getting the JA PS3. It can't hurt.

Where'd you find a 60GB anyway? They're discontinued.

ebay
the prob is that i have more us than import (like 15 to 1) so i'll take the us one instead of the jp if the emotion chip was region free i would buy the jp

If the emotion engine was region free there would be no need to buy a japanese one as it would be Identical to the NA one... except it would come with a plug that needed changing (for UK anyway...not sure about US) and the language it starts up in ;P

I don't know. My PS3 asked for Language upon start up, with each selection in it's native spelling. But yes, if the emotion engine is region-free, then it would indeed not matter. No plug change between US and JA, we use the same plugs and voltage.

Yeah, Japan is the only other country in the world with the same plugs as us I believe, so you wouldn't be losing out. But as said before,  if you have a working NA PS2, by all means, get the JP one. You may be kicking yourself later if you don't.

Sorry to announce that the 60GB PS3's have been discontinued, so if you want to buy a ps3 you will have to buy the 40GB w/ no backwards commpatability to PS2 games or the 80GB w/ enhanced online, but has limited online play.  I think that the 80GB is a better choice because Sony can still add games to the compatibility list or fix problems with games already on the list, though they may also remove games from the list.
P.S. Playstation 3 is built for importation so any supported imported game will work for it.
