Dead Content Prophecies of Ria - New Demo

Dead content awaiting restoration.
After yet another hiatus, I've returned to working on the project with the intent to finally complete it after 2 years in the making.  (20 months of which I was too busy to work on it :-/)

And so, I bring the latest edition of the demo (Version 1.1 I shall call it?)

And now for some background information:

Story

A war erupts between two neighboring worlds, dating back to the earliest records of history.  The world of Ria is plagued by constant conflict, as the Demonic races of Vae slowly consume its people.  In a last desperate measure, the race of man appeals to the Gods, and their prayers are answered.  The Gods intervene, and split the worlds into their own instance of space... though they damage the very fabric of this space in the process.  The scar is healed through a magical bond known by man as the Proxymal.

A thousand years have passed... and the Proxymal's light is begining to fade.  The Gods seem to have forsaken the world of Ria, and have placed man's destiny within their own hands.  As the keepers of the Proxymal are slowly slaughtered, demons are resurfacing on the world.

A corrupt general seeks to bring down the barrier for his own desires.  The people grow unsure of their fate, with no leader to guide them.  The once bright world of Ria is slowly slipping into chaos... but there still exists one last hope.

Characters

Zopharr Zoharr-  a young, yet overconfident youth whose only troubles are to understand the difference between selfish play and a true sense of duty.  Unsure of his purpose, Zopharr spends his days living in a very sheltered environment with Faradin D'Voure, the man who raised him from birth.  Rare to venture beyond the woods he knows so well, his naivety is only surpassed by his desire to see the world around him.  Though lacking a true purpose in his life, he is ready and willing as ever to discover what fate has in store for him.

Killy Kilmoore
- An ex-soldier of the Falleth army, Killy has forsaken his past with the corrupt government, and instead has taken up room with Faradin and Zopharr.  Killy's independence and knowledge are often mistaken for arrogance.  Originally intending to travel, Killy found himself at the doorstop of Faradin's home on a cold evening, and found himself staying for an extended period of time.  A few years older than Zopharr, Killy has assumed the roll of an 'older brother' to him, and has devoted much of his time training Zopharr to become a fighter.  He is doing his best to assure that Zopharr becomes more of a leader than a follower... perhaps living vicariously through him to forget about his past.

Alize ????- Born of an ancient blood, Alize descends from a long line of the Luxon race-- the race whose survival holds the Proxymal in place.  She was raised in isolation and is unsure of the concepts of the world around her, though his could not last forever.  When her parents are taken from her by an army of bandits, she is left for dead... until she stumbles across the home of Faradin.

Faradin D'Voure
- A retired guard from the town of Harrowmore.  Residing in the woods near his old place of work, Faradin how devotes his time to the simpler pleasures in life:  gardening, reading, cooking, and the like.  The father figure to Zopharr, Faradin volunteered to care for Zopharr after he was abandoned inside of an inn room in Harrowmore.

Aluvere Internecine
- A man befitting of his name, Aluvere is a mystery to most but a threat to all.  Now working for the Falleth Empire, Aluvere's skill has gone untested by any mortal man.  His ambition is locked on the discovery of a medallion, and will hunt anything in his path to find it.  Wise beyond words and skilled beyond reason, Aluvere is a true testament to the race his cloak bears the symbol of: the Sel-Ravin, a band of elite assassins thought to have disappeared generations ago.

General Erik Hydel
- Commander of the Falleth army, swearing fealty and submission only to his king.  His mind has grown twisted with time, as his ageless body grows to nearly 900 years old.  His name strikes fear in all who oppose Falleth, as his ruthless style and unforgiving demeanor lay waste to anything his eyes should come across.  Hydel is keeping a secret from the crown he swears loyalty to... and it threatens to destroy the entire world around him.

Known Issues

*There are some naming issues.  During its initial stages, the character Alize was known as Mollyn.  This was due to my ex insisting to have a character named after her (Her name was Molly, obviously.)  Since we've broken up, I'm now able to get her name out of the project, and it was replaced with Alize.  However, since I didn't plan on submitting a demo right away like this, I may have missed a spot or two where the name Mollyn is still used-- it simply refers to Alize, and I will correct it when I see it.

*There are some combat slowdown issues with the text.  I will look into this, and possibly rewrite the ATB script to be more efficient.

*I know there are a few graphical errors, such as when Zopharr runs into the wall and transforms.  I forgot to fix this before I uploaded the demo, but it has been fixed.

Tips

*This game was not designed to be easy.  Do not run from combat!  Developing your skills is essential to be able to tackle the challenged ahead (especially in the later game).  Because the side quests are not implemented yet, the opportunity for extra advancement is limited.

*Take advantage of skills!  The game is designed to make good use of the skills.  Spamming the attack button will only make your combat slower, and make the game even harder.

*Open your eyes.  Even the early maps are tricky, watch your surroundings for clues on where to go.  Scout your path before you move, but keep an eye out for chests hidden in the environment.

*Have fun!  Enough said.

If you have any questions or comments, or perhaps would even like to contribute to the development of the game, feel free to leave a reply or PM me!  I will gladly accept any constructive criticism in order to make the world of Ria a more enjoyable experience.

Well, honestly, the mapping isn't as good as I thought it would be after reading the description. From the screenshots, I can find a few errors and things that make your maps hard to look at.
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj210/Neverplayd/MapError1.jpg[/img]
There are two errors that bugged me in this pic.
Red Circle: Why does the edge stop there? The plateau is higher up than the ground to the right of the edge, so the edge should rise up a little higher. (it isn't possible for me to know how much since the screenshot is cut off)
Blue Circle: You made the cliff/wall strech out at the top, but not a the bottom. Same with the other side of the cliff.
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj21 ... Error2.jpg[/img]
Yellow Circle: Why is the wall where the staff is one tile smaller than the wall to the right? This may be because the wall is still elevating, but if you are doing that, than you should move the whole slope one tile down, so that the wall with the staff is adjacent to the wall to the right of that wall. (May sound confusing, but what I am saying is don't make one wall one tile big and the other two.)
Aside from the mapping errors, your forests look a little square and poorly developed. Use this autotile for round water instead of the normal square one:
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj21 ... dwater.png[/img]
That will make the water in your maps look more natural and less manmade. You should also probably look at some of the mapping tutorials around here to help with your mapping.

I fixed that error already.

Did you try the game at all to see the maps?  I did not submit my best maps as screenshots by any means... I instead posted mediocre ones.  If the user saw all fantastic maps in the screenshots, they would be less impressed by the areas themselves.

Thanks for the autotile, though.

EDIT:  Forgot to mention, that town with the error is not in the demo, it's not finished.  I just sent some works in progress.

Uhh, maybe you should posy a couple of those supposable "fantastic map". Don't take it the wrong way but, People would download it more if they saw it.

I hate to say it but your mapping is not as fantastic as you say. It is by no means bad mapping, don't get me wrong, and I wouldn't mind walking around on them. But.. You're kind of tagging silver as gold, if you know what I mean.

Seriously I wouldn't usually bother commenting but as you are touting as "exceptional" my best suggestion would be to get real.  The mapping quality is somewhere between mediocre and awful.  For a start, seeing as these are supposed to counter the usual boring maps, why are you purely using the usual, boring rtp.

Here's a good bit of reasoning I go on.  Forget about the rtp.  Then imagine a location, any location you want.  Give it a theme too, a mood and an atmosphere.  Now take time to look at all the rtp graphics and pick out little bits, look at other sets people have made too.  Trust me, you'll be able to get near what you want.  Then edit it a bit, maybe change some colours.  If you can't do this learn cos' it is easy.

I'm not joking but everytime I see a game purely using the farmtown thing plus the usual plain green grass + cliffs I wanna sprint through a brick wall head first.  Let's get a little more creative here.  Don't forget I know it's not up to me what maps people make, it's purely the fact you prepared to see mind-blowing, and i kinda knew I wasn't going to.
