[PPP] Inq's Steampunk Workshop

Howdy doodily, folks!

It's been quite a while since I last contributed to the resource section and I've been pushed into signing up for the [PPP]'s cause in this pixel competition. Luckily for me, the rules stipulate that you have to create resources for RM, not specifically RMXP or RMVX, so this time around I'm going to be doing stuff for my beloved RPG Maker 2003, the far more spriter friendly program in this franchise!

Since watching The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello, I've been very keen to make some STEAMPUNK stuff. It's something I've never done before and it looks pretty damn sharp. I couldn't resist!

My first sprite entry is an RM2K monster sprite for RM2K3, or any games that utilize side view battles on snes resolutions. It's a hefty blunderbuss machine. I've gone for a whacked out crazy design with no real logic to it. I don't think it really matters, so just think of it as one of those peculiar Final Fantasy type enemies. It uses 21 different colours, although I could probably get that reduced to 18-20. I'll report this and collect some points.

Coming up in the next piece, a whacked out robot with a taste for motorbikes...

I should have this one finished off soon.

Awesome Bro

Seen all these before and you know what I think of them. embed them in the IMGZOOM so people can see a little closer :)

You indeed have awesome stuff going there, if you ask me... it's a shame I always sign up to the same contests as the particulary legends in the respective categories XD But yeah, have fun participating, and good to see you're still submitting stuff here sometimes.

Pushed? You wanted to :toot:

Anyway, I've already commented about this on #pixel, but yeah, I think they are really good, and the bike one will be best if you finished it, rather then moving on to the cannon :3

Never got to comment on these before, but I think they look really great. I'd like to see how the other ones come out too if you're working on more.

Updating the topic with the finished the mad, manic motoring machine!

The next sprite might take a little while longer. There's a sheer lack of exciting steampunk reference pics on the internet to inspire me, so I'll have to have a good think about upcoming stuff. I've got other stuff on my plate too to slow me down.

Thanks for the positive feedback, guys. I'll just collect my points. ;)

Well, CGTalk has a steampunk contest going on right now. I can't claim it's all exciting, but you shouldn't have to dig long to find something in there that will get some ideas churning.

As always, the last one came out really good. Your color style works really well with steampunk designs.

Oh, Inq, your work always amazes me, and now that you're doing steampunk, I can't help but swoon. XD Very nice. <3 I'd love to see some cogs and things someday for tilesets and the like.

not even for me inq?
lol

The new sprite looks amazing as always. The smoke I'll be referring to, for all my future sprites, simply beautiful.

Awesome. I just wonder if you sketch all these things up before you start to pixel them. I always have some problems
with the perspective which seems not to be a problem for you. Any tips for me? I'd greatly apprechiate that!

One thing, not really big though as this is almost perfect. The very front of the wheel looks a bit flat
in my eyes right now. I dunno if this is just because of the half-side-view but maybe you should add some more pixels.

Anyway, great - as always.

Berserker: It's steam, not smoke. Tut tut.

Redman: I've changed the wheel a bit, but it doesn't look that much different. I'm admittedly struggling to make that look smooth, so I think I'll just ignore it.

For really big stuff, I tend to sketch out the pixel lines with my graphics tablet and then go back to refine them. I I don't sketch ideas down on paper that often and usually if I do, I've already made them in pixel art first. It seems I tend to work backwards. I don't have any tips for you, I'm afraid, that's just general art skills, not pixelling.

As for making more progress:

A couple of WIPs of some out of job (zepplin) dock workers. They're planning to give our benevolent hero quite a battering. At the moment they're just basic colours and linework, I'll get on the shading soon. I think I want to design just one more of them.

Looks like a mix of Pirates, Engineers and Train Pilots. Very nice and will look great when shaded (I hope)

I just didn't understood if the first one, the blonde, is "He" or "She" and in thew first one, shouldn't the sleeves have these stripes too?

Making progress. That's one down, two to go.

They're all male, R. I've put strips on the more refined version now, which I'll get onto finishing soon. And yeah, they do look a bit like pirates. :) I was intentionally doing old steam train drivers and engineer types though.
