[PPC] Lucian(Yggdrasill) vs. Marion(Wumpi)

As soon as the Pokemon left the 'ball Lucian burst out laughing. He had one his first match in the Pro Circuit, he was sure of it. A Dunsparce! A Dunsparce! Who was his opponent to think she could win with that?

Of course, it only had one weakness - one that he couldn't exploit - but it had no resistances either. It didn't matter what Pokemon he chose next, he decided, and so he reached down for one that hadn't seen any action in a while.

"Garchomp, you can have the honor of winning this for me!" he laughed. The Pokeball opened to reveal the menacing figure of Garchomp. The Pokemon roared and spread its arms wide, the fins on them resting on the side of his legs. The spikes on Garcomp's arms and legs looked especially dangerous, complemented by the rows and rows of sharp teeth in its mouth.

He lowered his hammer shaped head and bellowed again at Dunsparce.

Lucian found himself laughing uncontrolably again. It was the land snake vs. the land shark. Who would win?

((OOC: Yeah, Garchomp isn't technichally the land shark Pokemon, Gable is. But still, he looks a lot more like a shark than Gable and Gabite put together, and it just fit up there.))

Marion did her best to ignore her opponent's laughter.

Garchomp was a mixed blessing. On the one hand it was going to make Charge Beam all but useless. One the other hand, though...

"Dunsparce, use Glare!" Marion shouted, once again breaking her calm, trying to cheer Dunsparce on as best she could. The land snake's permanently-closed eyes eyes opened, making eye contact with the much larger Garchomp. With any luck the dragon would be paralyzed, either stopping it totally or slowing it down a lot.

Marion grinned. Luck was, afterall, Dunsparce's strong suit. If nothing else she would make the battle really, really interesting.

((OOC: The move description for Glare actually says it uses a pattern on its belly to intimidate opponents...

...I can't see dunsparce intimitating a Garchomp EVER. No matter how scary its belly is. /i gave it funky jungle-book snake eyes instead.))

Paralysis certainly wasn't good, but Lucian was still quite confident. Garchomp could freeze up during a vital moment, of course, and Lucian hadn't been having the luckiest match, but still there was no way to lose.

"Garchomp, Dragon Rush!"

...

The shark like Pokemon didn't move. Lucian sighed. He had no fear of losing, but he wanted to end this fast. Worse, every time Garchomp froze up one of its moves were revealed to the opponent.

Man, I need to stop shouting my attacks out Lucian thought. Oh well, next turn then.

((Does Paralysis mean I can never move or kind of randomly freeze up like in the game? I was debating between the two the but the former seemed kind of unfair and abusable.))

Marion smirked. Dunsparce had done it. Normally she would have dragged the battle on as long as possible, infuriating  the opponent with Dunsparce was impossibly fun, but this time the risk was too great. She needed to end this before the Garchomp did.

The ground typing made Garchomp totally immune to one of her favorite attacks, Charge Beam. On the other hand, it was exceedingly weak against another attack of Dunsparce's.

"Dunsparce, use Ice Beam!" She shouted, punching the air. Garchomp was both a dragon and a ground type, types which shared a common weakness - ice. The paralyzing effect of Dunsparce's glare would slow Garchomp down and the attack on a double weak point would hit it hard enough at least to make Lucian regret laughing at the land snake.

Dunsparce flapped the small wings on its back rapidly, not flying but lifting the front part of its body. It opened its mouth wide and a ball of bright light began to form between its jaws, so cold that dunsparce's breath could be seen condensing around it. Suddenly the ball of light exploded, sending a freezing white beam shooting toward the larger pokemon.

((OOC: I assumed that it was a drop in speed and some attacks failing like in the games. Seems a lot more fair that way. (Otherwise thunderwave becomes an instant kill :x))

"No!" Lucian shouted. He wasn't laughing anymore. He hadn't expected the ice beam, and with the paralysis he was in trouble. This had to end now.

Ironically, to do that he would have to bring back the very obstacle he had gotten rid of only a little while ago.

"Sandstorm now, Garchomp!"

All the sand that had settled from the last sandstorm picked themselves up and flew around the arena yet again, and Garchomp slipped in. I can still win he thought. In the storm Garchomp's speed was increased, so with any luck he would strike hard and fast before he could freeze up again.

"Now, just take it out with whatever you can!"

The downside of the storm was that once Garchomp was inside he moved so fast sometimes he couldn't be seen anymore. As long as Lucian kept shouting commands hopefully the fight would end soon enough.

((I couldn't think of a way to fairly decide when to be paralyzed so now I'm flipping a coin...  :())

"Tch..." Marion tutted, adjusting her glasses. The sandstorm, battering dunsparce and cloaking Garchomp, was a problem in more was than might have been obvious - she had terrible eyesight herself and the spinning sand made it difficult for her to discern what was going on. With Piloswine and Marowak it wasn't so much of a problem because Piloswine could take a hit and years of training with Marowak meant it knew quite well what she would order in a given situation. Dunsparce had neither of these benefits.

"This is a problem...Dunsparce, use ice beam again if you can!" She shouted, trying to see into the sand.

Where was Garchomp...? Lucian scanned the arena until he saw a faint figure just inside the storm. Suddenly a blue white beam flew at it and the blur dashed away, the beam continuing to hit the arena wall.

"Garchomp! Dragon Rush!" he shouted at the top of his lungs. The land shark must have heard, for the blur suddenly charged straight forwards, towards an enemy only he could see.

Lucian felt his nerves acting up again. It was almost to the end of the first match.

Marion continued to try to adjust her glasses, it wasn't helping at all.

She heard Lucian's attack order, though, and knew what Garchomp was likely to try. If it froze up, all was well and good but if it didn't Ice Beam would be too slow to hit.

"Dunsparce, use headbutt the second you see it!" She shouted. It was safter than using Ice Beam - the paralysis practically guarenteed that Dunsparce would get its strike in first and with it's Serene Grace ability, there was a more than half chance of the dragon flinching and leaving itself open. Added to the chance of paralysis preventing an attack it left the odds heavily in Dunsparce's favor.

She listened carefully for any sound from the pokemon, needing to know what was happening.

Lucian was getting frustrated. The sandstorm was neccesary to win, but it forced him to rely on sound alone. He hadn't heard the Dunsparce's cry or the roar of Garchomp, so he could only assume the paralysis had affected it before the attack could land. Hopefully it was still hidden from Dunsparce.

"Gar, the second you unfreeze, try..." he paused, not wanting to give Marion a chance to prepare, "...try that other attack! You know the one."

Nothing responded. Lucian sighed and hoped for the best.

((Do Dunsparces make noise???))

Marion waited, but couldn't hear a thing until Lucian shouted. So Garchomp had been paralyzed. The lack of sound suggested that Dunsparce had failed to hit, too. That wasn't ideal but was better than Garchomp striking. Dunsparce was fragile and would be lucky to endure more than one hit.

"Dunsparce, try again with ice beam!" She shouted, straining once again to see into the sand.

((OOC: I'd assume so, it has a cry ingame.

Also Lucian doesn't have to be hindered by the sand. Marion has terrible eyesight which is why she's having problems.))

"Dunsparce, try again with ice beam!"

Unfreezeunfreezeunfreezeunfreeze... that was the only word in his mind after he heard the command. He let out a sigh of relief when the blue white beam flew out of the storm and slammed into the wall to his left.

Now he knew one of two things: 1. Garchomp was over to the left and had just dodged or 2. Dunsparce couldn't see (or hear; Lucian knew nothing about how Dunsparces tracked their opponents) well in the sand.

Either way he was in perfect position to have Garchomp launch his personal favorite attack - hyper beam.

"Now Garchomp, if you're ready, roar!"

GAR! GAR!

Lucian found himself smiling again. "Fire!"

((Almost forgot to add... I couldn't see how he could see well in the sand. I mean, he would still be hit in the eyes by the occasional grain and if the storm was strong and big enough and cloaked Garchomp it would be hard to see him, and Dunsparce is small enough already. That's my reasoning.))

At first Marion mistook the roar for an attack, half-expecting an attempt to terrify her Dunsparce into returning.

That won't work - I can't use anything but Dunsparce.

Not even the compined effect of the swirling sand and Marion's near-blindness, though, could hide the glow in the sand. Far brighter than the glow from ice beam, it terrified Marion when she realized her mistake.

That roar was just a diversion! I should have seen though that...

"Dunsparce, use headbutt now!"

Dunsparce might, just might, be able to withstand the Hyper Beam if it was hit. It would be far safer if the headbutt forced Garchop to flinch but with Dunsparce's accuracy being so shakey in the sandstorm evenm that wasn't a sure bet.

Marion gritted her teeth and crossed her fingers.

((OOC: I mistook the roar for an attack when skim-reading :x Marion is apparently as stupid as I am.)

Lucian crossed his fingers. He was so close, but he couldn't see anything until the massive hyper beam fired. The sand around the firing zone was blown back for a second and Lucian could see clearly the event that had transpired...

((I didn't want to finish it since I didn't want to force hit with that and I can't force out anymore.))

Dunsparce had been hit. Hard. He had come flying out of the sandstorm just before the sand cleared. Marion sighed and prepared to recall the land snake. That had been lousy luck.

"Oooh, but it's still hanging in there!"

Marion's ears pricked. Once again she had phased out the announcer's voice while concentrating on the battle but it had just saved her from admitting defeat too early. Dunsparce was struggling, twisting onto its front, squinting eyes focused on the Garchomp. It wasn't ready to stop.

Marion was surprised, she never really used Dunsparce if there was a chance of it losing before, so she wasn't aware it could take quite so much.

She grinned, punching the air and yelling to encourage the land snake.

"Come on! You can do this! It's probably exhausted from that attack so it'll need to rest for now. It's still paralyzed, too! Use Ice Beam now, now's your chance!"

Lucian ran his hand through his hair. It was over. Hyper Beam had been his final gamble, and now the Dunsparce had managed to survive that. Of course, it could miss...

The Hyper Beam undoubtably had caused massive damage. The Dunsparce's accuracy must be affected because of its pain. And the sand was starting to regroup around Garchomp, so its camoflage was returning.

On the other hand, paralysis plus exhaustion meant that Garchomp couldn't avoid at all. It all came down to how much energy Dunsparce had.

Man, today isn't my lucky day... he realized. The Dunsparce charged up what could be the final attack of the game while Garchomp simply stared straight ahead.

Lucian considered forfeiting and withdrawing Garchomp insteading of risking the hit, but this fight meant way too much.

"Hang in there..." Lucian pleaded.

((Almost over...))

Marion couldn't see a thing inside the swirling storm but the ice beam didn't exit. Either Garchomp had taken out Dunsparce before he had got the ice beam in or...

Marion's pale face lit up. There was no way Garchomp could have taken out Dunsparce, it was exhausted from Hyper Beam. That meant that finally Dunsparce had managed to strike.

"Way to go, Dunsparce!" She screamed, continuing to punch the air in celebration.

"The snake's finally got an attack in, everyone, and it looks like it hit hard!" The announcer shouted. Marion paid attention to it for once, maybe the announcer had a better view inside the storm than she did. "Garchomp's struggling - is it going to get up?"

"Dunsparce, use Headbutt on it if it does!" Marion shouted - she could win this, she really could win it!

Despite the circumstances, Lucian laughed. He had been so close! His mind raced, seeing every section of the battle move by move and seeing what he should have done instead. He sighed.

"You got some luck, girl!" he called across the arena.

Sure, he could continue to fight, but it would be pointless. The paralysis and heavy attacks had taken their toll on Garchomp. The announcer shouted something - he ignored it. Who cared about the fight anymore? It was over.

The beam of light pulled the shark back into its ball, which he reattached to his belt as he turned to the exit. None of the audience was watching him at that moment, all their attention on Marion. Quickly, silently, and unnoticed he left the arena.

Outside the stadium, Lucian held the Pokeballs containing Empoleon, Staraptor, and Garchomp in his hands. He could feel the Pokemon's anger.

"Don't worry!" he laughed. "We'll get another chance. And next time, we'll make sure she doesn't get lucky..."

((Well, that was pretty much my last post I believe. That was fun! :)))
