Power Shift

Nothing to do with that... I might even end up with 50 events unused XD Nah, it's a lot of fiddling around with event conditions, but basically, the invert feature doesn't really work as intended (not to say it doesn't work on half the cases I tried to use it), and the lack of a "select instance of an object with instance variable X set to Y (that is closest to (select instance of an object with instance variable X set to Z))" condition that seems to be impossible to recreate is seriously blocking me off here... if anyone can help me out with that, I'd be most grateful ;)
And yeah, I'm still trying to avoid plugins... but maybe it can't be avoided...

In general, as soon as it gets a bit more complex with conditions, Construct seems to be the inferior choice. Maybe it's just me, but the ability to throw a line of code in as a trigger condition is really really missing imo...

Do you try to do that on the same object? You could use pick nearest if it is different objects.

Otherwise i guess the only way is to do it manually using distance function with pick all condition and such (altough i recall more easier solution on scirra forum)

So, aside from conforming the thread to Venetia's beauty ideals and updating the Credits accordingly ;), you can finally see a second screen of yours. Lots of background mechanics have been done in the meantime that I couldn't really show in screens, and even now there's only half of the interface you can look at (I will keep the unit construction menu to myself until I know what units you will be able to build in the end ;) ).

What you can see is the multi-purpose control display that serves as a hint on what you can do overall, which keyboard keys you have to press to trigger an action, as well as functioning as clickable and probably touchable (if I have the events left).
Other new elements are the unit's health indicators underneath them, as well as the current player turn being displayed underneath the fuel tank. There's also a less distracting background that you'll also find as the background of my thread (which you didn't notice yet because it's not distracting :p )

If you feel like it, give me input - but be fast :D

K, looks like this is my last update before the submission topic post, but there's finally a playable game in the first post... enjoy testing what I packed together there, and I'm definately glad for every input I get out of you - good or bad ^^

Not quite sure why that sounds threatening, but I'm glad I could win someone with simplicity ;)

And just out of curiosity... what did you need to edit in my submission thread post? It looks exactly how ai posted it...

I had edited it to ask you to please shorten your game's description. And then I saw that a couple of people had semi-longish descriptions, so I figured, ah, fuck it. I'll worry myself into the grave with trying to make people adhere to strict rules, lol :) (it's hard enough just getting people to submit forms the right way at all).
Already added it to the judge's forum so don't worry about it.

Aside from the fact that the widescreen format is too wide for my default setup (I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but I keep my browser on half my monitor), I couldn't get the controls working. The only thing that seemed to actually work was the escape button, and that didn't lead very far.

Glitch, that's not a valid crit ... If you're going to play a game, and it doesn't fill your window properly b/c you've scrunched your window weirdly in a totally atypical manner, and you can't be arsed to maximize the window, it's your fault, not BlueScope's :P

Anyway, BlueScope, I feel retarded here, but I have zero clue how to play this.
The game is beautiful and the music is amazing, but all I can seem to do is FUEL UP.
I really hope that I'm just doing something wrong here because it is too late to fix this bug (if it's a bug) and update it. Any submitted game HTML updates now = DQ.
Is there a key I need to press to create a unit? I tried mashing every key on my keyboard, but only [Esc] does anything.

It's a rotary strategy game. FUEL UP is kind of like "end turn". You click on the building thingy with the colour correspondent to your turn (blue or red) to build units, and you click on the created units to control them. The rest of the buttons are for the units: left or right to move around the planet, the bottom left button to shoot. I think a unit can only shoot once. As the units move, fuel is spent. Creating units cost fuel too, but ending your turn ("FUEL UP") will earn you a bit of fuel.

OHHHHHHH. I get it now. Seems like I did absolutely everything BUT click on the little buildings to create a unit. I feel like a moron.

(Would've been good for that to have been more obvious somewhere in the thread or elsewhere though! :P)

I do consider it a valid crit, though. It's too wide for my laptop's monitor too, and that's fullscreen.

Edit: I have proof! While it's not a debilitating cutoff, the fact of the matter is, there should be no horizontal scrollbar at all. And you can shove the so called web statistics under the rug, because I KNOW my laptop's resolution isn't so atypical as to be ignored completely.

As for the screen size critics: I definitely consider it valid as well... I know the statistics Glitch is talking about, and in my day job as a web designer, we still assume a minimum resolution of 1024x768 for our layouts. However, this is a game and not a webpage, and While I probably should have chosen a resolution of 1240x720 to still fit the 1280x1024 screens, I chose a resolution that high on purpose, as I wanted a wide-screen format for the on-screen controls.
It's a very valid discussion for C2 games in general, though... and I'm on Glitchs side regarding the whole issue, however Power Shift is not the only game that imposes a certain minimum resolution on you... and it's not a game I could've resized to 640x480 whatsoever.

No matter what, there"s always the CTRL+[-] solution ^^

@Ven: Trust me, I've been thinking about including some kind of in-depth explanations within the game, or write a user guide for it. In the end, I decided it might be the most fun if you actually figure it out yourself, just like with the old C&Cs where you're thrown into the desert and gotta figure everything out from there. Plus I assumed if there's one building on the planet, and there's nothing else to click, you'd try that ^^" (and it did seem to work very well for rosareven, I gotta say ^^ )
There wasn't really anyone to testplay it either... I finished this yesterday evening at 23PM my time, then drove to work to upload it and write the thread (cause no internet and all). My boss already saw it throughout the whole development process somewhat, and of course, so did Raven, so... I had to go with intuition, and apparently, that isn't 100% perfect yet ^^ Hope you give it another chance, though (it's not the game I'd like it to be, but 'unplayable' is definitely not what I was going for XD).

Also, what do you mean, "bugs"? I worked day and night on this for the last couple of days... the only way I would've missed something is because of stupidity while optimizing anything... but even after that, I testplayed it again a couple of times :specs:

Oh yeah, another question: What do I have to d to get the [finished] out of this thread's title and give it a RedVsBlue badge? Didn't want to edit it, as that's against the rules, but maybe you could do that really quick for me, Ven? :thumb:

I had the same problem lol! It never occurred to me to try and click a building. Perhaps if you're still planning to work on it more you could display an arrow on the display controls screen.

Great explanation by rosareven though, I'm off to try this game again! :)

I worried that the problem wasn't mine, it was the game's, after trying pretty much EVERYTHING except for clicking on the building. So yeah disregard the bugs thing :)

Go ahead and edit it now. The judges have a copy of your original thread as it was at time of submission.

Ah, I see... it was the game to be kept the same

And now that you all know how to play this thanks to rosareven, I'd love to get some input on it... especially if someone's sctually able to play it with two people!

This is incredible BlueScope! Iv been following your progress since I entered the contest so I know you put a lot of thought, and hard work into your game. But honestly I believe if this would have been entered in the Construct 2 rotary game contest last month, it would have won first place. I love strategy games, and yours is my new favorite :D

Look: 875 Gal. of fuel wasted in the process lol

This game deserves to win at least a Standard license. I really hope you continue to develop this game, I would pay to play. Your game really is a lot of fun! :D

Good luck with the contest, I hope you win :)

Thanks for that input... good to hear there's some out there as exited about the concept as I am :D While I don't think I'll be able to make it anywhere near the top (as it's the actual game that counts, not it's potential quality), but yeah, I definately want one of those licenses ^^'

And the plan definately is to make it bigger... however you won't need to pay for it, as it's gonna stay free ^^

BTW: 875 gallons tell me you've just tried what happens if you kill a base... if you could find a buddy to play this with and tell me how it is, I'd be eternally grateful! (okay, something less than that, but it'd still help :D )

lol, Ok BlueScope I will try to find someone at work tomorrow to play your game with over lunch break. The problem is that I live by myself, and all my friends are married with children so it's hard to get them to do anything anymore.
