The Myer's Briggs test always makes me feel evil, as it compares me to Rockefeller and Andrew Jackson.

The variation of the Myer's Briggs tested me as an Aesthetic-J. Every test I take tends to end in some form of that result.

I'm specifically wondering about thinking versus feeling. Religious people don't think well, so I'd expect feeling types to be more religious.

I'm specifically wondering about thinking versus feeling. Religious people don't think well, so I'd expect feeling types to be more religious.

Understandably, when we're inundated with images of religious extremists both in America and abroad; or perhaps we're accosted by some fool who tells us "we're going to hell if we don't believe in such and such" it's difficult to imagine that religious folks have any sort of reasoning ability. But all religious people are not like this. There are quite a few religious people throughout history and existing today who are fine thinkers, involved in the sciences, philosophy, and other fields that require good reasoning ability. And they often have a mixed spiritual and logical approach to defining their beliefs as well. I'd say that there are just as many non-religious "poor thinkers" as there are religious ones.

Look at Charles Townes for example, he won the Noble Prize in Physics and was the driving force behind the creation of the laser, he is also a devout Christian. Louis Pasteur, also religious, was a French chemist and microbiologist who created cures for quite a number of ailments and contributed to developing the first vaccines. I can think of quite a few noteable scientists off the top of my head who practice some sort of religion. Back in college, I found that there were just as many religious folks in my computer science and international relations classes as there were amongst non-academic populations I was affiliated with. They had a completely different way of explaining their reason for believing in their particular religion than the non-academic community generally did; but it was interesting to listen to both viewpoints. Come to think of it, all but one of my friends who became lawyers are religious. 1 Buddhist, 2 Catholic, 2 non-denominational Christian, 1 Jewish, and 1 who isn't religious. The religious ones apply the same logical principles to explaining their beliefs as they do within their work. And you can't get through Harvard Law, Bolt, Hastings, and Stanford Law without being a good thinker :P

I guess what I'm saying is that religion isn't the defining factor in whether or not a person is a "good thinker"; and poor thinkers don't necessarily gravitate towards religion anymore than they gravitate towards believing in nothing. I think there are T's and F's in both categories of people. I've found logical and illogical people in both religious and non-religious circles... in roughly the same distribution as well.

Yeah, I am intj too, I really LOVE natural science but my teacher wasn't really good, that is why I distanced myself from natural science and went more in the direction of law and economy. I am glad I'll have a new teacher after my summerbreak :] (My brother had the same teacher and says that she is a good one :D)

I've seen religion enter into some pretty unrelated topics on the internet before, but I think this one wins the unnecessary award.

Actually, the post was about whether or not religion defines one's ability to use reasoning vs. feeling (ie - being an INTJ vs. an INFJ for example). So actually it was quite related :P

It was in direct response to the question "I wonder if there is a link between personality type and religious affiliation?" and the comment "Religious people don't think well, so I'd expect feeling types to be more religious." To summarize it for you, my response was that I've seen just as many religious T's as I've seen F's. Have you been following the topic? Hopefully you know what I mean by T and F in terms of Myers-Briggs.

Next time you see the word "religion" you might actually want to read the post before commenting about how unrelated it is... these things aren't always just random paragraphs about proselytism :P
