Post your musical taste in seven songs or less.

This thread is for posting a few songs that you feel best describe the breadth and/or depth of your musical taste. I picked seven because I thought five was too limited but wanted it short enough for people to actually listen to. Try to link to streams or Youtube so people can listen, and describe the songs a bit (genre at least).

I listen mostly to electronic these days, with bits of metal and classical and rock mixed in. There's not a lot of music I actively hate, and I'll like pretty much anything if it's done well, but most of the stuff I really love is experimental in some fashion, so there's a lot of IDM, avant-garde metal, and post-rock in my collection. (wow that sounds kind of pretentious but whatever)

Kettel - "Kroost Kids"
I would say this is a typical Peri song. This is IDM of the chill variety.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87pZCUrmVbU
Wisp - "Negions Fail"
Another IDM song. I don't know what a negion is, but I like this song!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53ccA50SmIU
Squarepusher - "Coopers World"
Drum 'n' bass.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIzoyPfPKO4
Agalloch - "Limbs"
Doom metal, although I've also heard their work described as folk metal and avant-garde. I love Agalloch's music because it sounds like the frigid moors of Norway (I was very surprised when I learned they're from Oregon). This song is long, so bear with the long intro.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk9wwlzuwJE
Ephel Duath - "The Passage"
I guess I would describe Ephel Duath as...avant-garde metal? Jazz fusion? Something like that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzIK5FaC38w
Explosions in the Sky - "Your Hand in Mine"
Post-rock.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHeL0xgrQTg
The first movement of a violin concerto by Dvorak. When I listen to classical, it's usually the more modern Russian composers like Dvorak, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, etc. I find their stuff to be I guess darker and more engaging than the kind of fluffy froofroo of Mozart and his ilk.

This may be hard to do in seven songs but

I'm pretty picky with my music. I really can't stand most metal or rock or hip-hop or pop or house or junk like that. Sometimes I wish I had expanded tastes but I can't help what I like and don't. I like really soulful and melodic songs - songs that you feel from he inside-out, y'know? A lot of music, while good, feels very shallow and empty to me, but some songs reverberate from the deepest core of my being and just make me feel good.

I don't really prefer specific genres, just anything that sounds good to me. I used to listen to a lot of 8-bit and chiptunes but I think I've grown out of it a bit. I still do

I also listen to a hell of a lot of movie soundtracks. Anything by Alexandre Desplat, Steve Jablonsky, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri, etc. Some game soundtracks can be really neat too.

I didn't even come close to describing my music taste... but this is probably as close as I can get in 7 songs.

i listen to p much everything except like the most country or most death.
this is a pretty light selection i've chosen, but it all conveys a pretty moderate sense of my music

I have a pretty wide spectrum of music that I listen to, but let's see:

Some folks need to keep in mind that a large part of the reason I listen to stuff is because I like the sound, not because I'm some emo kid who gets depressed easily.

this is really as mainstream as i get

for the most part, i like things that make me feel pumped for stuff and make me happy. Chiptune is a huge part in my library and stuff, thats why almost half are chiptunes.

I know a lot of you probably won't listen to any, but I really recommend you listening to the first.

THIS girl, not generally pop. But I love pop songs covered by her.

I have a very eclectic, pick-and-choose taste in music that can be broad in many ways but also narrow by some people's standards. The only genre I despise is rap, and country is just "eh" in small doses but the more I hear of either the more I want to harm myself and others. I'm relatively open otherwise, but I listen mainly to music that won't make me feel tense...

For me, Beirut represents my love for traditional-type music permeated by creative expression.

Andrew Bird is a musical genius. Period. His music mixes classical training with a large range of folk elements and witty, word-play lyrics.

Venus Hum is a beautiful lady's voice accompanied by electronica sounds that keep the mind busy while she keeps the heart content.

Hawksley Workman's The Delicious Wolves has a powerful presence. He's all raw voice with powerful accompaniment.

Gorillaz is ever-changing and inventiveness at its best. This is the only group which has made me like rap even slightly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VD9Yk0PiarM

Marcy Playground is simple, sweet, and deep when you bother to step in the puddles. Alternative rock all the way.

It was only recently I found 8bit stuff like this. I knew 8bit music was around, but I never listened to it before. The first of 8BitbEtty's (Bryan Teoh) songs I found was his Reading Rainbow rendition, but I thought Nikoma's Theme was a great song to introduce his work.

Although I primarily listen to alternative rock and metal, I actually have wide tastes. I like all sorts of stuff, from alternative rock, video game music (from well known franchises such as Mario and even obscure chiptunage), metal, some rap, metal, orchestra music among other stuff. Some electronica too.

Cake is one of my favorite artists. He has fantastic instrumental work and his voice is quite uncanny.

Simply put: Ozzy is the godfather of metal.

God, I love Bit Trip Fate's music. Clubtastic.

Music like this is what made me fall in love with Rayman.

2pac was a phenomenal rapper. While he wasn't as regarded as having a good flow as Biggie, his messages where very powerful ones.

Sonic Colors was a game that amazed me and blew my expectations out of the water. It wasn't a perfect Sonic game, but very close. This is my favorite theme from the game.

wu-tang d:eek:
not much to be said, ghost's verse (the third dude) is the best rap verse ever written... and ghost definitely is the best MC ever.... (imo, because he is more consistent than the gza and his work as a whole is better, gza maybe number one after liquid swords 2)

Let's bump this thread, as it's cool.

1. Mathcore (Mathcore is a highly technical, very progressive form of metal, metalcore, or plain experimental rock.
Think eccentric time signatures, angular melodies, dissonant chords, atypical rhythms, peculiar chord progressions,
and just about anything else that sounds technical).

Examples= Converge, SikTh, Protest The Hero, The Arusha Accord, Ion Dissonance, A Textbook Tragedy, Cave In

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9wZDd_GgPs

2. Avant-Garde (is a subgenre of heavy metal music loosely defined by use of experimentation and characterized by the use of innovative, avant-garde elements, large-scale experimentation, and the use of non-standard and unconventional sounds, instruments, song structures, playing styles, and vocal techniques. It evolved out of progressive rock, jazz fusion, and extreme metal, particularly death metal and black metal.)

Examples= Maudlin Of The Well, Kayo Dot, Monarch, Hypno5e

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik-Fp2defYk

3. Progressive Metal (Progressive metal blended elements of heavy metal and progressive rock music, taking the loud "aggression", amplified electric guitar-driven sound of the former, with the more experimental, complex and "pseudo-classical" compositions of the latter. Progressive metal often kept the conceptual themes associated with progressive rock. Throughout the years, progressive metal has borrowed influences from several other genres, including classical and jazz fusion music.)

Examples= Opeth, Ana Kefr, Periphery, AtomA, TesseracT, Follow The White Rabbit, Intronaut, Farmakon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dB1NuL-8Dhc

4. Post Metal/Sludge/Shoegaze/Doom (characterized by the extreme use of "build-ups", best way to understand is to have a listen to the suggested songs. Sludge is a heavier version of Post-Metal) I've clunked these together as they sound a lot a like, they only get a bit heavier and more distorted.

Examples= Isis, Neurosis, Cult Of Luna, Amia Venera Landscape, Battle Of Mice (Post), Mastodon, Baroness (Sludge), Swallow The Sun (Doom).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sopiG1Qhlh8

5. Hardcore/Crust/Blackened Hardcore (Hardcore is generally faster, thicker, and heavier than earlier punk rock/ Crust is partly defined by its "bassy" and "dirty" sound. It is often played at a fast tempo with occasional slow sections. Vocals are usually guttural and may be growled or screamed/ Blackened hardcore is hardcore punk or Crust punk mixed with Black metal)

Examples= Defeater, Native Wildlife, Modern Life Is War, Courtships (Hardcore) Black Breath, Masakari, Alphinist, Oathbreaker, Black Flag, Kvelertak (Blackened Hardcore) Remains of The Day (Crust).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60vR0Ejy0hM

6. Floradian Death Metal/Tech Death (Death metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal. It typically employs heavily distorted guitars, tremolo picking, deep growling vocals, blast beat drumming, minor keys or atonality, and complex song structures with multiple tempo changes. Mix this up with Jazz-fusion for Floradian Death metal.)
*I'm not a really big fan of normal death metal, except for the band Nespithe*

Examples= Cynic, Death, Atheist, Augury (Floradian Metal) Necrophagist, The Faceless, Fallujah, Spawn Of Possession (Tech Death).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmfHoesWQ8Q

7. Black metal (is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Common traits include fast tempos, shrieked vocals, highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, blast beat drumming, raw recording, and unconventional song structure. Black metal has often been met with hostility from mainstream culture, mainly due to the misanthropic, racism and anti-Christian standpoint of many artists. Moreover, several of the genre's pioneers have been linked with church burnings and murder.)
*I usually enjoy to more mixed kind of band of this genre like black folk*

Examples= Burzum, Der Sturmer, Agalloch, Abyssal, Addaura, Alcest, Wolves In The Throne Room, Ulver, deafheaven

Mhh 7 songs is not enough I can't even mention classical and indie.

The music I listen to depends mostly on what activity I'm carrying out. For example, when I'm in driving in my car I like to listen to soft rock and classical music. When I'm cooking, I love listening to jazz. When I'm drinking, I like 80s pop music.
