The majority of chavs do nothing but drink in the streets (at pathetic ages), traffic drugs and cause trouble for no reason. Most of them are influenced by others which causes large groups to form, leading to more damage being done. They're the type of people that if they're with other people and you look at them, they'll want a fight. Whereas if they was on their own they wouldn't even think about it.

On the other hand I have a number of mates that dress like a chav but don't carry out any of the crime that comes with it. They do drugs and shit, but anyone can do drugs, really.

Most UK gangs dress like chavs (so I've seen) and it all starts from these little groups hanging around the streets. Liverpool (Where I'm from) used to be the worst place for all this kind of violence, but now it's nationwide. Especially in parts of London and Manchester.

Wow thats pretty interesting. Had no idea there were so many different variations for the word. But do different gangs exist in other countries as well? Such as we have the Crips, Bloods, Sur 13, Los 3, Latin Kings and things like that?

Crips and Bloods are an LA based gang aren't they? Along with the Latin Kings? You should really watch Ross Kemp on gangs. He's an English actor that visits different gangs all across the world. American and English gangs have shit on some places I've seen on that show. Some of the situations he finds himself in are VERY scary and intimidating. It's a great eye opener to what's going on around the world and how the people that live away from it all should appreciate what they have.

The best part about the guy is he visits these gangs and their leaders with no protection other than his fists and on the occasion a bullet proof vest. Carrying a weapon could pose himself as a threat leading to him getting killed. He's visited pretty much all the big gangs in every country you can think of, each one documented and available to watch. Not sure if this show gets aired anywhere else other than the UK but I'm sure he's going to release a boxset if he hasn't done already.

actually there are some more subtle differences. as a scholar of european and american urban youth culture, i would argue that chavs and gangstas are in fact different groups. however the comparisons are logical, as they do resptively fill the same function in both societies

A Gangster relates to organised crime to me, whereas chav relates to ASBO youths, not really the same in my eyes.  I also think you can be a chav without effectively breaking the law, in the same way you can be a mod or a rocker, its a social thing.  Not to say you can't have gangs of chavs that are involved in those areas though, because clearly you can and do.

Yeah, you can be a chav without breaking the law, but being a criminal is sort of a rite of passage in their world.

They hang around usually in groups of four, near schools, bus stops, or shops, mainly because they know they have nothing better to do.  They are arrogant, noisy, and annoying and have consistent use of the word "Braaapppp"

They are alcoholic, smoking, inbred surrender monkeys with no future...
