portfolio critique

I am an aspiring user interface designer and I would like a serious critique of my portfolio so far. I am trying to get ready for GDC 2011 and have already started applying for jobs just to see the responses i would get. I want to know if I am on the right track and what if any designs I have created are worth keeping. Please leave any comments positive or negative, but if negative please give comments on how to improve

Looking at your Photoshop and Illustrator segments, you're relying a great deal on filters and gradients to save work for yourself. Filtering text and images like that is quite ugly, and beyond that it's the mark of an amateur -- not the sort of thing you want to show on a portfolio! Heavy dependence on gradients is probably another thing you don't want a prospective employer to see; remember, the purpose of a portfolio is to showcase your own talent in things like form, posing, perspective, and colour. A couple AdventureQuest weapons or a sloppy vector snowman on a sloppy gradient hill aren't going to knock anyone's socks off.

I think that right now, more practice would be invaluable to you -- both in terms of the programs you're using and art in a more general sense. Don't rush to meet a deadline just yet, because from all these filters and gradients it's pretty clear your training wheels are still on. Get better acquainted with your tools of trade and it'll pay off for you in a big way!

Hey thanks alot. That is very good to know. I do love gradients. Ill definitely keep working on it. so is there anything in there so far that I should keep or do I need to ditch it all until I get better at the programs?

On your 3D work the proportions seem way off, but that may be partially because it's a orthographic render, I'm not familiar with Strata3D, but if it has a perspective view toggle, you should definitely render that way. As for composition I can understand that it is for an overview or something like that, but otherwise you should try to keep the angle low if you're aiming for photorealism, in your case the person would have to be like four meters tall to take the picture. Hope it helps :)
