Plants vs. Zombies

This game is surprisingly brilliant. It has the perfect mix of humor, art style and plain fun elements.

If you haven't heard of it, it is a simple premise. You are a home owner and your goal is to plant seeds on your lawn that are a variety defenses against the hordes of zombies invading your lawn. There are tens of different plant types, from pea shooters to cherry bombers, even a walnut shield.

It is in essence a tower defense game, but one of the few that are done extremely well in my honest opinion.

And heck, it even has a narly music video!

You can get the game for only 10 dollars off of Steam, and I believe there is a demo you can download as well for about 30 minutes of gameplay.

My score so far if I had to judge it on a 1-10 basis, a solid 8.

EDIT: Yep, that's it. This is the best game I've ever played. It's over. That's it.

Michael Jackson zombie just moonwalked onto the lawn and did the thriller, summoning backup dancer zombies.

I was bored to hell with the demo... wish they threw more cool stuff in there. think best zombie I saw was the polevault people and cold peas. is full game as slow as first half hour was? any more challenge?

help file had me laugh. check it if you havent :D

The game starts out a bit slow at first, but it definitely gets more interesting. (At nighttime you can use mushrooms, backyard you have to use lillypads in your pool to plant seeds on it, etc.)

Also the minigames are great fun! There is 'Whack-A-Zombie', 'Bowling for Zombies' and a good amount of others.

It does get rather challenging later on, so don't expect a huge bore through the whole thing if you give it a go.

Also, yes he does look tripped out! He is the mind-control shroom that when a zombie touches him the zombie fights for the plants. Quite a handy little devil!

Ah, I'm actually the composer for Plants vs. Zombies :P I also made the song in the music video you linked... it's cool to see that folks here are enjoying it.

And yes, the game gets really interesting later on... especially the content that opens up once you finish Adventure Mode. Quite a few of our hardcore gamer friends are enjoying challenging each other in survival mode, which can get very difficult.

My my! This forum is full of budding celebrities aren't they!

You did quite well though, I must say! It's one of the few games I keep the music on instead of muting it and playing my own tunes. Well done!

I just hit level 5 now, this is getting rather exciting!

Well thank-you, I'm really glad that you're enjoying the music, I had a ton of fun making it :P We just visited the company in Seattle this past week and people kept coming up to me and asking, "are you the sunflower?" Hehe ^^

Ah, you got to the roof! Nice... have you seen any "buttered" zombies yet?

Aah, not yet! I await their arrival though; the slippery devils.

And hold just a tick, 'are' you the sunflower? :blank: I had thought by composed and wrote you meant simply the music and the lyrics. But did I misunderstand and you sung the melody as well?

If so, by George, your voice is quite lovely. :thumb:

Aww, thank-you ^^ Yes, I'm the voice of the sunflower :) I wrote and performed the song. I always joke about how I had to "get into character" by looking at this giant picture of the sunflower, haha... I also did a Japanese version which you can listen to here if you're interested:

Uraniwa ni Zombies ga!

(my Dad is doing the voice for the Japanese zombies)

Haha! Brilliant!

Yes I've heard the Japanese version a few times over, they are both equally enjoyable. You did perfect my dear! :thumb:

Do you have any further work lined up that'd involve your singing? I'd love to hear your next piece when/if it is finished!

*^.^*

I do have some upcoming projects, so I'll make sure to post when they come out :) I try to post work at my website (http://www.mybluedream.com), although I should really be better about consistently updating it. I've also been doing songs here and there for my own game. I think my favorite one is either Carya de Mio, which is Dominic's theme... or Traces, which is Liele's theme.

My, these are amazing. I especially am loving Traces. It's such a soothing melody.

Excellent, excellent work here. You have some real talent!

Though, I suppose we should stop discussing such a topic before the moderators toss some warnings for derailment. But definitely, very nice songs my dear.

I finished it a few days ago, it's definetly one of the better games from popcap's pantry (though most of thier games are...lackluster). Some of the mini-games/puzzles/survival stages seem to sporadically decide to be difficult and pretty much unfair (to the point where I can't be bothered keeping up replanting spikes over and over and over).

Also the "Zen Garden" is irritating me with it's "I'm a shitty litte plantpot weed that cost you $2500 and probably won't net you more than ~$800 profit. Regardless of how negligible my worth is, please spend $15000 on a gramophone just to keep me happy".

I spent all my money on cattails ;/

@Cryaotic: Thanks, I'm glad you like Traces :) I'm looking forward to working on the part in my game where you actually meet the character that the song is about.

@Holly: I'm glad you like the cattail ^_^ That's actually my cameo plant... (I have a pink cat hat that I wear when it gets really cold), so that's the first thing I spent my money on too, hehe. Yeah it's definitely my favorite Popcap game. I'm really happy that PvZ's been doing so well because I think it sends a signal that it's okay for companies to release more creative and original games that focus more on gameplay than 3D next-gen graphics. I just love how hardcore gamers on Steam are really getting into it... but yet both my parents have been able to get into it as well, hehe :P

Have you gotten a chance to try out Survival Mode yet?

@blink: Aww... he should give you a turn, hehe :) I kind of like watching others play too, because it's fun to watch other people come up with new strategies that I never would have thought of.

If you guys want something funny to watch, you should totally check this out:

This is the kid of the game's artist... he's so cute :) He calls them "bombies" haha.

Yeah, the survival modes are fun. The first ones are easy, since nothing really breaks through once you've got a decent line-up, but the Survival: Day(hard) level is giving me grief lol. My normal way of a column each of sunflowers/double suns, snow peas, repeaters/gatling peas, tall-nuts and the rest spikeweeds/spikerocks doesn't work when the zombonies and the jack-in-a-box ones come along and destroy everything ;[

man this game is surprisingly addictive! though it's no surprise, popcap games always lure me in. how much time have i wasted on insaniquarium or zuma or feeding frenzy :(

and nice work on the tunes, miss matcha!

I feel like playing it just because of the music video, holy crap.

I was wondering where you've been, Miss Matcha, now I know!

man, the gold magnets make life so much easier :x

like this, you can get $3-4000 and a handful of plants for your zen garden (three usually, which at $3-5000 each fully grown, makes the total about $12-19000) on one level for no effort really:

easy_money.png

The only thing you really need to do once everything is planted is replant the walls and garlic occasionally, though you will need to pay at least some attention, because the magnets only pick up money and gems, they won't touch sun, chocolates or pot plants for you ;o

@Venetia: Thank-you :) Oh, George will be happy to hear that you liked Insaniquarium, that one was like his first major project. He tried to put some cameos from it into PvZ (like "Stinky the Snail" in the Zen Garden area).

@Tindy: Hehe... that's awesome :) Yeah, I guess I haven't been around as much lately! The PvZ soundtrack took a lot of time, but I had more fun with it than probably any other game I've worked on. Perhaps because I had a lot of creative freedom (and perhaps because the game has such a fun and quirky theme to work with). Recently though I've been trying to take fewer contracts as of late so that I can devote more time to finishing my game.

@Holly: Nice screenshot! I like reading about the creative ways that people use to earn more gold in the game... you know, I've never tried out Gold Magnets before, I'm going to have to give that a shot :)
