Pixel Challenge 2: Desert RPG!

Uh... let's see, I made some rocks, trashed the bush thing because I hated it, made some footprints, fixed the cave entrance, fixed the building up a bit, and added a little guy just because.

Okay, lets give this another try: (I made one of these cool gifs which shows the old version first and then switches to the new one)

@CanadaATW: Imho you shouldn't use your darkest color too much in your mountain and house tiles. The dithering is pretty nice though.

@twirly: I like that last sandtile best.

stuff..

Shouldn't the cactus' shadow be semi-transparent instead of opaque?

Keeping a low color count is something relatively important in Pixel Art.

I'll be working on something soon. Cool, it ends on my Birthday. :3

I'm going on a trip this weekend so I'll have to work fast on Monday and Tuesday to finish. I'm going to attempt to record myself as I work and upload it for you to watch. It's something I've been wanting to try.

Adjusted Colors, Added AA on some tile pieces, Attempted tree:

Somebody's going to say it's still too bright, I can just tell :X

well, alright then  . I've just scrapped the current rock walls, and am in the process of remaking them. I've got six, maybe seven colors in the palette and it's red browns to orangeish-peach, so hopefully this will fix the issue. I'm also going to spend a little more time and do something different from the horizontal rock line things I have right now.

Hopefully I'll have something to post later tonight.

I think I still need to change or at least adjust the colors on the rock ground tile. I don't know, I think the colors on that tile make it slip more towards 'beach' rather than 'desert'...maybe that's just me. I might just do what I did with the walls and make a new tile. I still haven't changed the palette on the tree yet, so ignore that for now.

Awesome Bro

To be honest I think that looks TONS better, although I don't quite like the diagonal areas, it looks like you've just stretched it 45 degress vertically (If that makes sense, lol), not sure why, it just looks really flat o.O

However, that said, I DEFINITELY think that looks better than your other :thumb:

I recorded myself working on my cliff yesterday using camstudio. I compressed about 50mins of work down to about 5mins of video. My computer won't upload pics or video atm so I can't show you my progress. Since I was aware of the fact that I was recording myself I didn't stop to look at references or just stare at what I had to make judgments.

Edit:
Still troubleshooting my video problems. But here's another peek at my progress. It doesn't tile as gracefully as I'd like but I can't be picky so close to the deadline.

Edit2: My Final Entry (what I got for the deadline at least). It's still rough IMO but I got to submit something. I made diagonal cliff walls but they're missing a couple corner tiles so I can't really use them in a map right now.

There's a few things I'd like to work on, and probably will, but I think this is going to be it for this contest!

A hero sprite and maybe an NPC or enemy is encouraged but strictly optional. The only restriction is that the tiles must portray a desert scene and be in 3/4 perspective like an RPG.

I was going to try and add one but just ran out of time.

Wow, that looks tons better, piggman! Coyote, too bad you didn't get a chance to finish; I was looking forward to the final product. Be sure to post it somewhere on here if you get around to polishing it. And Canada, I like your water tiles in the thing you sent to me. Great work, everyone. The voting thread is up; let me know if I missed anyone, and please PM entries to me in the future!

Some nice pixel work here. I see that Piggman won, but looking at it I would've shot for Greenraven to win. Those sand dunes on his are beautiful! The cactus is pretty solid too. The skull could do with a little tweaking though.

Some refreshingly good results from all the contestants though.
