Pikmin.

Does anyone here like it? I love it....in fact I am replaying them…both of them :D
Well, Pikmin has to be commended for its remarkable replay value. Also, the fact that you get to manage a whole army of plant things, and they will go and kill the big bugs and stuff… as you meticulously search for treasure… ergo these traits make Pikmin one of my favourite series of games.
The second one is better though, of course (multiplayer, exceedingly dangerous caves, Pikmin respond to whistle faster, more treasure, etc ect)
I certainly hope there will be a third one…

There's a Pikmin 3 announced for the Wii, but no details have been released, other then that Olimar isn't the main character...though I may be wrong, GameFAQs is full of liars.

I played the first one, but never really cared for it. It was a unique idea, and I must say that it was a good game, but it wasn't really fit for me.

Can you go through the mechanics and what not? I've never once played them, and there seems to be a great big hype that I wouldn't mind getting into, should I like the sound of it.

Cheers,
Jono

Uhh well if by that you mean... hmm I'll try and explain. It is a very unique game, and I absolutely recommend it (both of them)!

Official site = http://pikmin.com/launch/index.html
Wikipedia = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikmin

There are different colored Pikmin which each have different skills and traits. In Pikmin 2 there are the additions of the white and purple Pikmin.
Controls:
  • Control Stick
    • Tilt slightly - move cursor
    • Tilt fully - move character
  • B
Blow whistle to call Pikmin so they will "follow" you.
  • A
    • Punch - Olimar (or whoever) does a punch which delivers a small amount of damage to enemy. This only works when there are no Pikmin "following" you or directly behind you.
    • Throw Pikmin
    • Pluck planted Pikmin
  • X
Dismiss and separate Pikmin by color. This makes them idle, so you will probably want to make them come back using B.
  • Y
    • Pikmin - View Olimar's moniter (a map of the world, showing stars to indicate pieces of the ship, and details on your Pikmin etc)
    • Pikmin 2 - Change leaders between Olimar and Louie.
  • C Stick
    Move Pikmin.
  • L, R and Z
Controls the camera (not very exciting, so you will have to buy the game to learn more about this.)
  • START/PAUSE
    • Pikmin - Pause the game
    • Pikmin 2 - Pause the game and view Radar Screen, Menu Screen and Item Screen.
  • D-Pad
    • Pikmin - Has absolutely no function at all
    • Pikmin 2 - Use sprays - Ultra-bitter spray
: Petrify enemies temporarily and Ultra-spicy spray: Supercharge your Pikmin temporarily (make them super strong so you can totally destroy enemies.)
Also:
  • You cannot ever have more than 100 Pikmin on the field. When they aren't on the field they live in their "onions" which you find...
  • A day on the game last about half an hour (I think....).
Objective:
To restore all the parts of Olimar's ship "The Dolphin" when it crashes on a strange planet due to a giant meteor hitting it whilst it is flying in space. It breaks, and all the pieces of the ship get scattered all over the strange new planet. (There are 30 pieces.)
You must then find them so you can repair the ship and fly home!

Also you have only 30 days to find all the 30 pieces (because Olimar's space suit has a limited supply of the gas they breathe on planet Hocotate (where Olimar is from) and I can't remember what it's called BUT the gas on the strange planet is OXYGEN which is very toxic to residents of Hocotate!). However sometimes you can get 2 pieces in a day if you're quick, so it won't necessarily take you all 30 days to complete the game.

Characters:
Captain Olimar: A small bloke who you control, and he commands the Pikmin army. Thus fundamentally you command the Pikmin army.
Pikmin: The little creatures that Olimar discovers on the strange planet. They aid him in destroying a big, nasty creature... or he aids them :P Kinda like symbiosis I guess.

Types of Pikmin:
Red: Strong attack power and are not harmed by fire
Yellow: Are very light so they can be thrown high, and can handle Bomb Rocks which are used for breaking down big walls in your way and attacking enemies.
Blue: Can swim in water (other colored Pikmin would just drown).
Objective:
To find treasure that's worth money, because Hocotate Freight has gone bankrupt due to space bunnies eating the exceedingly valuable golden carrots on the ship Louie was driving... or something like that... so you have to go back to this strange planet, in this other ship though, which is old and rusty because the President had to sell the Dolphin due to being super poor... lulz

There is no limit to how many days you have unlike the original. Take as long as you like~ (but it will make the President mad! :P)

Characters:
Captain Olimar: Same as above
Louie: Olimar's assistant to make the job easier for him, since you can control different armies of Pikmin simultaneously.
Pikmin: Same as above
President: He joins you after you lose Louie once you have repaid all the debt. After that, the President will join you in place of Louie so you can search for Louie. His actual name, is President (or Shocun in Japanese), and he's the president of Hocotate Freight.
Types of Pikmin:
Red: Same as above
Yellow: Are very light so they can be thrown high (same as above), but unlike the original there are no Bomb Rocks in Pikmin 2 so instead they are have resistance to electricity.
Blue: Same as above
White: Are resistant to poison, and very fast runners.
Purple: Are very strong - they have the strength of 10 normal Pikmin, which means you can carry very heavy treasure more easily. They're also useful for chucking at enemies because they're very heavy, and will cause a lot of damage.

Hope I helped... if I didn't explain it clearly, let me know. :D

@Dopples: Do you have the URL to the article? I tried typing "Pikmin 3" into Google and there weren't any serious articles about a release.....

Sorry, it was on a list of "maybe" games talked about during E3. None of the Nintendo Officals said anything themselves, but Shigeru Miyamoto said "Don't be surprised to see a new Pikmin game." Wether it's for the DS or the Wii, I dunno, but it's not for the Gamecube, that's for sure

I doubt they'd be making it for the DS seeing as the DS doesn't have the same kind of power that the Gamecube has needed for Pikmin.... (it'd be a lotta sprites :D)

Finally! More Pikmin fans!

I've rented Pikmin 3 times, and Pikmin 2 twice, don't own either of them yet. To this day, I'm kicking myself over and over again after I turned down an offer to buy them both for $30.

Anyways, Silverwolf, you information is kinda...too technical for someone who has never played it. Jonosasson, just read the wiki article/ask me or Silverwolf for details.

As to the rest of you, (minus silverwolf as he has already answered) what one of the two games are is your favourite? Personally, I have to go with number 2. The level design and overall atmosphere in Pikmin 1 is much, much better, but Pikmin 2 scores points for the caves, new pikmen that are actually useful, references to common objects, and a multiplayer mode that doesn't suck.

EDIT: Fixed 6 misspellings of 'Pikmin'. Man I must be tired.

Heh, whoops. Sorry ^^;

You could probably do better, Triddy :)
