Pickup Objects in Battle

While moving forward with my project, I ran into an idea of sorts. I would like the battle to contain items on the ground during a battle (Minkoff Style). I want the user to be able to pickup the item and use it as a weapon or add it into their inventory. Like say of the person found a bat on the ground, he could pick it up and use it in battle or until it broke or he threw it.

Might be hard or not at all. Please give me some direction on how to accomplish this. Scripting is easy for me but I am no expert by far.
 
Use said minkoff, like side view. Just set it up with events so that some groups of enemies have items sitting around and if you choose to act/attack it yo u can pick it up or add it to inventory.

Conditional Branch- if enemy battler=item, add option to pick up, ad item to inventory/change battler graphic and weapon.

Sorry the lag is killing me so it might come out hard to understand.
