Peri practices painting again

Hopefully gonna do more of these (and get farther out of my comfort zone), but here's something I did tonight (maybe 2-3 hours):

I really like Makoto Shinkai's art, so I'm pretty much blatantly ripping it off for the sake of practice. I think this one needs more going on in the foreground and probably some more contrast as well, so I might work on it again tomorrow. I tried a river, but it didn't go very well.

Awesome Bro

Holy fuck Peri that looks beautiful! I don't know who this Makoto Shinkai dude is, but I'm gonna' take a look now lol. I love the colours too, and those clouds and the sky look amazing!

Gonna use this for a rmxp battle background lol.

No but seriously if this is great work. I have a couple paintings Imma need u to forge Neal Caffrey style.

The sky is seriously great. That is the first thing i noticed.
The color palette is also great. I love the cool feeling of it.

The perspective (IMO) is a little off. With the long grass at front i would think the horizontal would be lower?
The big cloud on the right i feel off centers the piece esp because the long grass is more emphasized on the right too

so good job~

Good point, bacon! Okay, I took that into consideration and made some other changes. I'm at work, so unfortunately I don't have my tablet and a few things need touching up, but whatever. I think the river is kind of ass but am not sure what to do about it.

*Jaw drops*

That is good. I'm not good at giving critique, however..

It makes me want to save up my money to for good art stuff like a tablet and painting program so I can get as good as you!

Honestly, you can get by with a pretty cheap tablet, and I didn't pay anything for Photoshop. The main thing is practice and studying the work of better artists. I've found a really good way to get better is to try very hard to imitate someone who's better than you. You'll learn a lot in the process and adapt their style to yours, so it probably won't end up a blatant ripoff unless you're directly copying.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!

That river is gorgeous. Might need to be a bit wider at the front for perspective's sake, mainly on the right side, but otherwise I love it.

What size is this canvas btw? Have you downscaled it for posting up here, or is that the size you're working on?

Ah yes, I see what you mean about the river. Is this better? I also increased the contrast again. I never add enough contrast for some reason.

The canvas is 2000x1500, so this is at 40%.

Looks much better now!
Love that river, though I feel you've added too much contrast for the distant grass, hurts my eyes a tad.
Loving the rich blues though.

Okay, I didn't change anything too major, but this is the final version:

I made the grass darker and added some details, mainly. Jbrist, I appreciate the feedback, but the original had way too little contrast. I like this because it has more hue variety and looks more visually interesting.

Trying to get less bad at both people and sketching. I did this in about half an hour:

Kind of the same character as the one in my avatar. Since I'm probably never going to write the story she's from, I'm borrowing a lot of the ideas for it for something else.

the final of the landscape is nice! nice contrast like you said yourself.

the shadow of the underlip is too hard though, (if you need some crits; that was the first thing i noticed)
I like how you did the jacket/coat, with the soft highlighting, really brings out the material

Yeah, I agree, Tomas. I'm probably not going to be revisiting this one specifically since I'm trying to get better at sketching and not using these for anything, but I'll keep that in mind for future ones.

Thanks, Xhukari!
