I'm shocked no-ones mentioned some of the classics of the mid/late 90's:
System shock 2, Thief 1/2, Deus Ex, the original Unreal Tournament, X-Com Apocalypse/Interceptor, Dungeon Keeper 2, Total Annihilation, Theme Hospital, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Neverwinter Nights 1, and I'm sure that's there's more that I'm forgetting.

If you have Windows 2000, then you can also get DOSBox to run older games (visit Abandonia or Home of the Underdogs). If you have Win 98 or earlier, rejoice, because you can run such things without emulation, as DOS still exists under Windows' bonnet.

I remember metal fatigue required a fair amount of 3D acceleration. My laptop won't even launch it

Metal Fatigue is for a pentium 233 with a 32 meg video card. It just hates XP.
