Ostich help

I've never sprited before, except for some color changing.. I'm new to all of this. I want an ostrich for my game (non-fighting), and decided to give it a try rather than try to pester someone to make one for me. :)

I would appreciate ANY critics (well, besides "Gods, you suck!", of course. :s ) before I spend a lot of time doing it wrong and have to fix ALL of them, so here's one view of it.

Thanks in advance...

You've got the basic shape down, however you haven't matched the size and style of the RTP. Typically, an Ostrich would probably be about 1.5x the height of a standard RTP Human. Maybe even as close as 2.0x.

You've also not shaded it like the RTP is shaded. Check out some of the Shading tutorials in the Tutorial section. I believe Kaizer's tutorials are still up. They aren't exactly the best for animals, so I would also open up the RTP Chicken and RTP Cockatrice (Bird01), as well as maybe the RTP Horse and use their shading as a reference.

I'd also start with a strictly standing position. That Ostrich looks mid-stride to me.

EDIT: This is all assuming you are attempting to Mesh it with the RTP. If that isn't the case, could you post an example screenshot of the characters and tilesets you are using?

Sorry, I should have said. Yes, I'm trying to mesh it with RTP (I rather like it), but I do want it to be proportionally bigger than an ostrich would be to a human.

I'll take a look at the tutorials... Are you saying the 'style' should be bigger, thicker, or what?

I'll work on the standing position, too. The mid-stride is just what came out of my hand on paper, and then onto the computer. :)

Cool. Can I use this once you've finished it? I've been trying to sprite an emu, but it always comes out looking as if it were made to swallow metal rods. This looks good so far, though. Maybe darker shading with slightly less saturation, or perhaps more contrast.

For one thing, you're going to want a little more of a top view on him, which means the legs will be shorter.
RTP generally has a stronger outline, and definately more contrast.

If you need refrence to look at the animation, check out these photos by Muybridge:

The hard part it deciding what frames to use.
As Prex said you should have your first frame a neutral standing pose.
