opium's dump

Alright, I'm pretty new to this pixeling thing so any and all critiques are majorly appreciated.

Templates

Started on a template and a walk cycle... eventually I want it to be 6-7 frames, but I'd rather improve what I've got first. edit: I've decided to work on smaller stuff until I get better, and then try to do a big template, so I probably won't work on this abomination for a while

The beginning of an attempt to edit the RTP so it's less goofy-looking, but I really don't like her face. She looks high or something.

Version 2.

Characters

Practice sprite from the sad attempt at a template up there. :I

Character from the edited RTP.

More to come as I get more time. :)

You need a better pallette
Shading isn't always just a darker shade of a colour. For skin, you often go into a pinkish, or orange hue.
This is what I use (basic shades):

It's a good example of where to go with your colours, to add life to your sprites. I wouldn't use these colours exactly, and these colours only - you're going to need some in-between shades, and might need a lighter shade, ect.

Also, you may want to fix the face a bit - it looks like the sprite has one absurdly large nose.
Maybe raise the eyes, a little less shading there, more focus on the out sides, and around the eye.

Alright, thanks for the crit. :)

I decided to try my hand at editing a pre-existing template before I start on something as ambitious as a large template like the one above at my skill level. So I started editing the RTP, trying to pay particular attention to color like you said, trying to make it more dynamic.

why are all girls good at pixel art? i absolutely suck at it. try to use ImageZoom ( ) ; so its better for us to see the image and gradients.
Imo the chest is too shiny compared to the sides.

Hey! I'm good at pixel art too >:I
Just never show it off :P

I can see a slight improvement, but you're characters still looks gray.
Add a bit more pink to the shades

Gotcha. Updated again, and I tried to push the color more.

Got started on the back sprites, but frame 1 and 3 look terrible. Like... tubular caterpillars attached to her torso.

Awesome Bro

... That editted character from the RTP looks pretty good, although it looks like you've used a few too many colours, and there isn't enough contrast.

But uhh, your title is misleading, I was expecting a picture of an actual dump in the toilet, maybe with you doing a thumbs up at the side of it... you make me sad.

These are really nice templates. I wonder if these will be usable in RPG Maker 2000. I don't think so but it is worth a try!

I like the style and the colours though.

Oh dear, Jb, you don't need to bring toilet humour into every sentence to be funny you know!

... Oh come on, the title says "opium's dump", I didn't even know what an internet "dump" was until like a year ago... the first time I heard about someone making a dump thread, I literally thought it was going to have a picture of a log in the toilet, so I was scared to click it... I was 11 at the time, welcome to the internet, eh?

Anyways, can't really say anything else extra onto what I said before, try using less colours for your templates, but increase the contrast so you can tell the difference, I'm starting to get the hang of using 4-7 colours for an entire template or whatever I'm doing.
