(non computer) Console/DVD/TV problems - flickering screen and darkening

Yes I know this forum is for "Most things related to computer hardware or software can be brought up in this forum.", but I'm going to take the most to be for prospect threads :)

My TV is old as hell, I got it when I was like 10 and it doesn't even have stereo.  It's got a cable ready hook up only.  That is to say it only accepts this hook up: http://www.electronicplus.com/images/products/PP3T.jpg
I got a DVD player long ago, it cost like 20 bucks back when PS2 was still new.  It only had the three pronged wires (you know, those red/white/yellow settings).  So I used by VCR, which has the single thick wire ability, and the DVD into the 2ndary input of the VCR, with the VCR's output going into the TV.
For this to work TV has to be on channel 3, and the VCR has to be on the 2nd input channel - which if nothing is playing shows a blue screen.

Now whenever I put a DVD into the DVD player I had problems.  The screen would suddenly dim for anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, and it would flicker as if the video input was being turned on and off - so I'd get sudden flashes, or even prolonged showings of that blue screen.  Oddly enough audio is perfect (for lack of stereo).

So I just figured cheap crappy DVD right?
Well whenever I hooked up anything else, in the same method, such as the Playstation  2 or nowadays the Xbox 360, nothing happened.  It was perfectly fine.  No dimming or flickering whatsoever.

That is until I put a DVD in.  This sounds retarded I'm sure, but a videogame on either system (or any system for that matter!) works perfectly.  The moment a DVD is put into the DVD player, or either system that can play them, boom.  I get hit with the flickering and darkening dim.  I can't explain it, I have no idea.  I've even ran to other rooms to check to see if my DVDs were just that fucked up at first, since many where cheap bootlegs of kung fu movies and the sorts from the 70's and all.  The kind of stuff that looks burned from some factory copy.  But no, worked fine.  Real official non cheap DVD's were tested, and those suffer the exact same problems.

I don't know what it is that wouldn't allow a DVD to play normally, yet would allow a videogame to work - and aren't most of PS2 games read as DVD's anyway?  If it's a DVD thing shouldn't that be picked up?  Or is there some odd signal or whatever you'd call it in the DVDs that my TV is too old to read?
None of this makes sense but I have no other explanation.

The DVD, and when using them for DVDs the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 2 all work on another TV, which has the 3 pronged hook up.  The VCR and when using them for games the Xbox 360 and Playstation 2 all work on my TV, just not the DVDs.

Any clue?
