New portfolio and stuff

So since the previous summer I've been diving into javascript and been working on my website.
http://tomasknipscheer.nl/ is the result. There used to be another website (http://tomasknipscheer.nl/v1) but this is now.
It relies heavily on jquery .get() and doesn't allow for the back and forward buttons (yet).
This used to be deliberate, but I think I'm going to modify it in the near future so I can hyperling with more ease.
The system is located at http://tomasknipscheer.nl/js/scripts.js if anyone's interested.
There are some php snippets here and there to crawl directories, mainly for the menu and the images.

I made this new version to give myself more of a break when putting new items on the site.
Images are automatically resized and added to the quick view, and made a part of the shadowbox utility.
The menu items are automatically generated and categorized from a directory structure.
Nice and smooz.

I also made this with a couple of friends: http://multividual.nl/
It's more advanced, more flashy, and more of a side project. Still cool.
Comments?

The homepage looks pretty sexy. I love the animation of the labels that pop up on the gallery buttons on mouse hover.

However in the galleries I didn't like the fade to white on mouse-hover. In order to see the images clearly I can't have my mouse anywhere near the center of the screen. Also I feel like it's counter-productive to click on an image and just get a smaller version.

As an alternative, maybe mouse hover dims the rest of the page except the current image?

Your art's really nice, though.

Well technically all the images on the galleries are big images resized to 960px width.
If you click on one it shows you the big image. Admittedly this doesn't work if you have a small screen, sorry for that, maybe I should disable the hover for screen dimensions below hd.
Also thanks ;)

Elegant. Simple. I like it.
thanks!

Like it. Easy on the eyes. Thank you for sharing the script too. I've always been curious how other web developers do their ajax-ish website.

Mine has a lot of redundant code in it since I added some functionality later on and was lazy, didn't want to rewrite stuff.
But it works and isn't too slow so bleh

Oh yeah I see it resizes now. I'm using the smallest size macbook air where the highest resolution is only 768px high.

On another note with the resizing, in order to click through a gallery I had to move my mouse to the new position of the >> button when the next image of a different size showed. Perhaps keep the buttons relatively centered at the bottom of the images instead of far corners so that they don't change position with each image, that way I can keep my eyes on the images and still click through each image without moving my mouse. Maybe this is partly some more small-screen problems too though.

Also I'm just being nitpicky with crits, hope you don't mind. Your website looks good. :thumb:

Alternatively you can use your arrow keys ;)

Yeah happens to everyone. Keeping the code clean is hard when you're wrist deep in trying to get the functions working.

Ok so I added some responsive menus instead of the old menu, this is fresher and cooler
I would screenshot the old ones for comparison but that's not possible anymore :(

menu position changes on window height < 800px and width < 1300px

thanks!

yeah its presentation might be a bit misleading though, I think I've made it look too much like an active speaker while it's just a random analog dock, which enhances the experience. So if you'd buy it you would probably not be very content with it after a week. still cool though. I need to design a speaker that goes along with it.

Nah that whole thing does it for me, keeps everything together in one place, less moving parts to go wrong, etc. The iPad really should be a self contained device, so just having a wrapper like that that makes it fit into the decor is pretty awesome as an idea.
