New Party Member's Level

I wanna make it so that when a party member joins the party, the new party member's level is the same as another one of the party member's level.

I tried setting a variable to the certain party member's level, then changing the new party member's level to that variable, but it didn't work for some reason.
It seems that it doesn't work with any of the Actor's _____ options, because I tried them all, but it works with the other variable operands I tried.
By the way, I'm using RMVX.
