~ Netherial Knights ~ { A GOTHIC STORY }

I have started to make a fantasy rpg with the RPGXP MAKER. I have progressed quite a bit by myself, i already have a number of playable areas and a few quests up and running. The game was influenced by the final fantasy series, devil may cry series, and gothic fantasy fiction. The game is set in a sort of sci-fi AND medieval universe (sort of like Warhammer 40k) The game will be very dark and morbid and will feature quite a bit of violence so if thats not your thing...........stay away! :pissed:

The Ancients have been around for time eternal, far longer than any other known race. In this time they created a empire that spanned entire galaxies, although this was not to last for an evil as old as time itself and more sinister than even the vile powers of chaos was to all but annihilate this advanced and sophisticated race. Ages past like mere days and what was left of the Ancients rebuilt and repopulated what solar systems they had lost. Now eons later this race must fight and prevail against this evil again, for if they should fail in this most dire task then all will be lost.

The game now has:

* A Large Castle with many hidden traps and treasure
* A Large Dark Citadel with many features to be your home
* A RPG points spending system for attributes after gaining levels
* A full day and night system
* A "limit break" battle feature (like final fantasy VII)
* A number of long story driven quests
* A number of detailed cut scenes
* A deep and engaging plot

AND ITS NOT EVEN HALF DONE!

Lucian Hellbrecht:

Lucian is the main (and only playable) character in the game. He is an "Ancient" (the oldest and most powerful elven race ever to exist) His past is shouded in mystery and not even he knows of his origin. He walks a path set before him by a choice he made long ago, and it is this choice that will eventually destroy him. Lucian is a dark and morbid Ancient that speaks little and favours the rightious path of life. He will do all in his power to protect the innocent.

The following is an excerpt from a very long story i have written for this games story:

"Even in death he shall have no release, for the price that he payed for the power to protect the ones that he loved with every ounce of his being was to all but destroy him in the end.

He knows this, though he cares not, for it was but a small price to pay for the freedom and peace that it will eventually bring to his people in due time. He now waits for that time, that time when he must sacrafice everything to save their souls for utter damnation.

So now his fate has been ultimatly set, he and he alone is aware of his unfortunatle untimly death. He loves his people so, that even with the little time he has left in the land of the living he spends it helping those that would require his aid.

With nought but a subtle smile on his face, and a grim reminder that all will end for him, he marches forward into the dark abyss that will consume him in order to save those who made him fell so welcome and content.".

The games title "Netherial Knights" is a combined word made up by me from the words "Nether" (dark, evil, negative) and "celestial" (holy, rightous, and divine) the "Knights" part is obvious. So the name of the game broken down is "Knights of light and shadow" or "Knights of twilight".

The game is set in the distant future on a planet not so different to earth in the oldest known part of the universe. The planet has all the geographical locations earth has eg: tropical, arid, temperate etc... plus a few more that earth doesnt eg: twilight, wasteland.

The main characters name is "Lucian Hellbrecht" he will be the only playable character in the game but a number of "friends" will be met during the story and they can "help" him with his battles.

The game is primarily set in the temperate locations but as the story progresses and dark truths unfold the main character ventures deep into the unknown in search of lost relics and knowledge to battle the evil that is to come.

The following is part of the VERY long story in the game. "In a distant galaxy lays the planet of Gothica in who's dark past holds a terrible secret. An ancient evil has been awakened after countless eons of imprisonment. And this very evil threatens to consume and corrupt all things living and dead. Only one being can send this evil back to wenst it came, and save our souls from damnation eternal.......And he be our dark lord Hellbrecht.

I hope i will get some positive responses and i also hope that someone will be willing to help me continue to make this game

If anyone can help me further develop this game i would be more then happy to help them in their project should they wish it (im not all that skilled as of yet but i can map and write very well) Thanks in advance

First play your game and press "Print screen" on your keyboard.
Now open up a program like Paint: Start>Programs>Accessories>Paint.
Press Ctrl+V and you should see your screenshot.
Now save it as a *PNG.png file.
Now go somewhere like here: http://www.tinypic.com
Press "Browse" find you image and press "host".
Now wait for the page to load, and there should be a link with image tags which will look like.
Copy and paste that into your post, and your done.

Many thanks kind stranger!

I knew about getting screenshots off the game (i already have a whole folder full of them) i just wasnt aware how to get them onto my post.

Screenshots are up now.

Thanks again.

Well, I'd say your mapping needs quite a bit of work. There seems to be a large amount of wasted space; I'm not entirely sure, but if you're not using the wall autotiles, you should. Otherwise, you'll make every room 20x15 at the least, and rooms weren't made to be that large. For instance, your third screenshot, the dark temple-looking place, is very empty. Empty maps aren't a good thing; you could reduce the size of the room, though, and keep the general layout, and it would look much better.

Your fourth screenshot suffers from Wide-Open Spaces a bit as well; again, the room is simply too large for what's in it. Going by relative size, there's enough space between the piano and the table to build a bedroom of average size. In addition, I find it a little too symmetrical.  When you map, you should always think of why something is there. What purposes do those four chairs serve?

Just reduce the sizes of your maps a little and you can avoid making things look big and empty. In the default interior tilesets that come pre-packaged with the game (Port Town Inside, Farming Village Inside,) there is a wall autotile that does exactly what it sounds like; it lets you show where the walls are in the house/dungeon. If you've just imported these tilesets, go to the Database, select Tilesets, and under Autotiles there should be Wall-01, -02, -03, etc. Pick the Wall autotile that fits the tileset (stone for a dungeon, wood for a house, etc.,) and go from there. I'm sorry that I can't give much of a tutorial on how to use Wall autotiles, but I don't have RMXP on my current computer. To get an idea of how to map well, though, you might check out screenshots from some projects in the Completed section.

Good luck.

Hmmm.....thanks for the constructive critisism. Ill try and use the wall auto tiles in future (i know what they are i just never liked using them and didnt like the look of them)

Oh yeah sorry about that, im obsessed with symmetry

I have updated the screenshots and made the rooms smaller but the "Dark Citadel Hall" (the dark morbid screenshot with the pillars and torches) is meant to be massive, as in tall AND wide so im not changing that.

Also the current tileset im using (its a set that has all the tiles in one so you can use ANY tile you want on ANY map) doesnt have autotiles so i cant give rooms walls and things except for when i change to another tileset (but that limits the objects i can put in) and seeing as how i dont know how to put the autotiles i require into this one big tileset im afriad all the rooms are going to look somewhat like the screenshots.

Some feedback off the community would be nice...

This thread has almost 100 views and i have only got three comments so far...

Keep it constructive please, as i dont appriciate insults or derrogatory terminology.

This game does not look too bad, but the maps do need some work.

I don't understand. No autotiles? You can just use autotiles in the RTP...

Good work!

HOW do they need work? i need to know whats wrong with them before i can fix them.

It may be hard to understand but i downloaded a tileset that has ALL the tiles for RPGXP in the ONE set so i can access and use EVERY tile in the ONE map but it has NO autotiles. This is really convinient because it allows for a much bigger veriety of objects and scenery to be placed on the one map. It is also inconvinient because i have a lack of auto tiles.

Thankyou

Your outdoor maps look really nice, but your indoor maps need to either be filled with more objects, place them away from the walls and think of real life, in real life you don't have rooms with just a table, or make the room smaller.

I'd suggest not calling the old race featured in your story "Ancients", as it's not only redundant, but it invites people to jump down your throat on how that sounds like FFVII, etc. etc.

The "Ancients" is really only a place holder name untill i can come up with a original cool sounding race name. I just thought to myself....well they are incredibly old.....and the first thing that came to mind was "Ancient" so for now im sticking with it.

It looks interesting, albeit a little clichéd. But most projects are, so don't worry too much. As to the autotiles thing... try this.

In the database, make several different tileset slots. Have them all use your massive tileset, and then you can have seven autotiles for each tileset slot. Seven should be good for one map, and for a different map you can just use a different one.

That helped alot.

I updated the screenshots with the autotiles being used to make rooms.

I gotta say, your thread title mislead me. Modern 'gothic' is synonymous with 'romance', and i was expecting that much.

Your main character leaves me puzzled instead of interested. Dark and perplexing personalities don't mesh well with the 'I love everyone and will protect them" schtick. He's pretty much just Jesus with a suit of armor on.

I liked that the main race of (humans?) managed to build an emire (or what have you) to span galaxies. You don't get that one every day, that's for sure.. BUT - ... you'd figure they'd have known about this mysterious evil had they been around since the beginning of time, and had the intelligence to conquer galaxies. If they're possessing that kind of intelligence and technology, somehow I think they should have seen Bowser coming.

Well ive got several thing to say in reply to what you have said...

First off its partially my fault for not including enough of the story in this thread, but ive written a small NOVEL on the background and plot of this game (was a book i wrote in my spare time before i decided to make it into a game) it outlines HOW the main character is "Dark and mysterious" and WHY he is in the first place.

The ENTIRE game is based around "Lucian" fighting for his people but most of all his beloved "Ariel" although he must eventually sacrifice himself to banish the "EVIL" so the story of the game is a romantic gothic tragedy. Again its my fault for not including enough of the story but im hardly going to post my entire novel, so dont tell me the story isnt "gothic"

Long story cut short he was somewhat of a living saint before he was corrupted by the malevolent evil countless mellenia ago, but due to the almost uncontrolable evil now coursing through his body he has become a stong silent type only speaking when needs be as almost every action he performs is painfull. He loves HIS people and LOATHES all other races because it was the others that abandoned his race in their time of need (when the evil destroyed their empire.)

YET AGAIN more information from me would have helped this  They arent humans they are KIND of like an elf but are biologically superior in terms of body and mind. They saw the evil coming but as i previously mentioned the other races abandoned them to fight alone and they were too few in number and were defeated.

I think this incredibly large post sums everything up and fixes a few problems....

Oh and one more thing........you want gothic?........heres my myspace  myspace.com/obscurum_eternus

I know what your thinking, a goth into video games? no way!............well its true so if you dont like it you can kiss my ass

That is all...

HOLY SHIT, haha i was randomly going through the contents of my HD trying to free up some space and i came along my game, wow, its been a while haha.

I remembered posting all this on the site so i thought id have a look for it, and to my amazement it is STILL ALL HERE haha.

I actually did make quite a few improvements on it before quitting to focus on my last year of school, now that ive graduated and have a little spare time i might jsut start on it again.

WOW...... the memories haha

Strangely, why isn't anyone talking about no screenshots at the Concept Developement forum?

Though the Ancients part is used, I think you can slip it away since it's not a "cliche" yet.
