My thesis survey - responses needed!

Hi guys,

I haven't been lurking here for a long time because I've been in a heated battle completing my Bachelor Honours thesis. Right now I'm at a stage where I need data from everyone ever.

If you can fill out my survey to assist my research, I will be eternally grateful. It'll only take you 2-5 minutes to complete: http://goo.gl/5GZMC

A quick overview of my research: I'm comparing differences in social network site usability between Western and Eastern cultures (hence the first question "which country were you born in"). There are few academic researches I come across that make such comparison for social network sites, being a new and rapidly evolving genre of the web as well as the difficulty of conducting a cross-cultural research. Hopefully my little research project will shed some insights for the academics and developers alike to improve SNS experience for everybody.

Wow you guys are truly awesome. I was expecting this thread to sink to the bottom XD Thank you!!!

I'll make some hard work out of this, then come back and make games. Woohoo

By the way I'll continue to accept response for one more week, then I'll close this survey for analysis. I might do another next year with an updated version but if you can spread the word now about this survey, more dataz for me. Yay!

I feel obliged to do something awesome for you guys in return. Beside giving my soul and body parts.

Should I make a game? Write a haiku for each of you? Badly draw pictures for you?

I find filling in the form difficult, I use all the services listed but for work only, collaborating in work projects, this survey seems geared towards social/entertainment usage of these services.

Also, I use computer and mobile at the same time with the services at work, my desk is a laptop with skype open with a mobile phone and tablet plugged in, both running facebook and twitter constantly.

Should I fill it out ignoring my usage of it all in my work life?

I had the same problem Xilef but just filled out the data with the assumption that I was only listing information as it pertained to my personal (non-work) use.

@Rosareven: Up to you :D I am always excited about anyone doing anything silly or fun for the forum :D

I'll fill it on terms of my personal use, but the data I enter would be vastly different if I did it from a work point of view...

EDIT: Yeah it does seem that the survey itself is written towards a bias...

I couldn't really emphasize this in the survey, but tools that work not only stationary and mobile, but also on all operating systems (or at least Win/OSX/Linux) are very important to me. Therefore, plus because of the fact that OS-specific programs are never guaranteed to be continued in development, I try to focus on web-based platforms or non-proprietary protocols when I consider new means of communication.

Good luck with your thesis from me as well.

Hey guys, I checked back few weeks ago but the website seemed down, so I waited until now to respond.

First, thank you all so much for the survey. Now I need to translate the survey to Chinese in an attempt to get more Chinese responses XD

In regards to the bias towards social/entertainment theme of the survey, thanks for pointing that out. The survey was created with my interpretation of the research articles I came across about social network usability and usage behaviours. These social network research, after you guys pointed it out, do appear to focus on social + entertainment usage as some sort of a "normal use case". When social network is associated with work, there're always separate papers talking about it instead of investigated as part of the general social network usability area. I also haven't come across a paper that talks about people using social networks for different purpose in one platform.

It will be noted as a limitation / future research in my thesis. Thank you all again for the awesome responses. Beside doing this I'm also going to see if I can come up with something silly for you guys.
