My first tileset...

Well, a while back I decided that I wanted to learn pixel art, simply because that would make it possible for me to make games using my own graphics. And since I'm not a great 3D modeller, this seemed like the way to go.

So I followed some tutorials and create my first tileset, or at least began to, because it's obviously far from finished. All I have so far is grass, cliffs, and inanimate water. I'm pretty satisfied with it for a first try, but I'm also aware it's nothing amazing and I wanted to get some opinions on it. Maybe I can get some tips that will help me improve, who knows.

Anyway, I made a quick map using my tileset, so here it is:

The left side of the cliff needs to be lighter or darker depending one which way your shadows go. As for the rock edges, make the base tile darker and fade into the higher/lighter levels, and use different rocks along to cliff tops, base, and sides to break up the pattern.

There's some horizontal lines on the grass that could be broken up more with the lighter green. But it's not that bad unless you have large areas of grass or something.

man this looks a lot like the rm2k rtp. i think its because of the way you did the angles.

grass texture has one instance of very notable tiling. go ahead and throw another color in there.

can't see enough of the water texture to say much about it.

use the textures themselves for areas where the tiles merge. like the bottom of the cliffs, that straight line is jarring. dont be afraid to have the grass creep up in there. here's an example:

maybe its hard to see because its small, but the grass creates the illusion of depth by being in front of the base of the cliff.

Yeah I think the way forward is to kind of merge the tiles together, even the water tile, at the moment there's a clear boundary between grass and water; this creates straight lines that look unnatural. Overlapping grass would look good all around, maybe a slight bank on the water, etc. It's looking good though and good luck with this.
