My First Pixel Art (help me fix it!)

These are my first pixel pictures (WIP). Please comment/criticize to help me fix them up!
Thank-you.

1. Power-up container of some sort:
2. Mossy rock:
3. Rose:
4. Smiley:
5. Person (walking downwards):
6. Person (walking right)

Some of these really need work on but I need counseling on it though. So please tell me what to fix! Thank-you.

What are you planning on using these for?
Icon graphics? a Side scrolling game?

If you are planning on making a game with a top down view you're going to need to put more depth into them. Also, when you are working that small you want to keep the number of colors as low as possible. You don't need to cram 5 shades of yellow into a small space.

edit: oh, and you don't need to place everything in a spoiler.

Oh ok. The hardest part for me is the lighting and shading. Not to mention making battlers too lol.

Why you lucky dog, Ocean's Dream! Just one line of pixels for shading and you got a perfect sprite! Me? I sadly and stupidly feel like I have to make more lines of shading. Oh and I suck at anatomy it seems!

I MUST IMPROVE!!!

I never use just one line of pixels for shading.

Well, here's a few tips for now. When working on a sprite, I find it best to use a middle grey background to work on, rather than black or white. It's easier to see the contrast of tones on middle grey.

Be aware of color divisions. You don't need to use black all the time to seperate one thing from another all the time. If the difference between 2 colors is big enough, you don't need the black line there. For example, you don't need the black line that seperates the hair from the head, and it'll give you extra pixels to work with.

Second, when a person is walking, when their right arm goes forward, their right leg goes back and their left leg goes forward.

When picking colors, you may want a blue that isn't so saturated. I dunno what program you're using, but if it's Paint, when you create a custom color, make sure the saturation (sat) isn't at 240. In character Maker, just make sure the slider isn't full on one color only. Although you can get away with it for darker reds.

Hair is not an easy thing to shade, so I would look at other sprites for a reference, and start with the base color, then the next color, then add the highlight last.

I did a edit of your power up.
powerup.png

I did hue shifting in the colors, So from purple red to yellow red.
And i smoothed the lineart out.
With the shading i added a highlight and made it look sphereish.

thanks guys. I'll keep that in mind. LOL I'll definitely keep the right arm and the left leg back thing in my head. It's so amazing how you guys can make something as junky as my art and turn it into something good LOL. Thanks again! :thumb:
