My first attempt at an icon

Hello everyone, I'm new to RPG Maker XP (Started playing it about two days ago) and I've gotten an interest in Sprites, but I figured before attempting to make characters, I should start with icons, so here it is, my first icon thingy, it's not very good, but hell, what did ya expect :P

It would be highly appreciated if I could get some pointers on how to improve my "skills?" (I wouldn't call it that xD)

Nice to see people do still take interest in creating their own work.  I made a mistake of jumping into the deep end on sprites, but your first tentative steps seem to be a little too tentative.  For one ... You've used a gradient.  Two, there is no depth to it.  Three, I can only guess its meant to be some sort of iron cross.  The quick an simple solutions ...
One, Don't use gradients, they use too many colours and when compared to other sprites around them, they stick out too much.
Two, I notice the one pixel shadow along the right hand edge.  But from a glance, it seems very 2d. Add a bit more depth to it with two or three pixels.  You may need to widen the actual cross for this. (If pixel Academy is still running try there)
Three, when posting icons for C&C its best to post what they are, this saves time and confusion.

I see your used a RPG Maker VX icon to begin with.
Your best way to start is just editing already made ones to begin

Alright then, looks like I'll join the Academy ^^
A big thanks to you all for pointing out where I need to start my first edits, and for pointing out where I should go ^^
