Multimedia Resumé Question

I'm a total n00b when it comes to creating video games. I was wondering about resumé preparation. Where can I post about this? Any help would be appreciated.

You mean like a resumé for applying for a job? I don't see the connection to creating video games.

I'm going to move this to...um...general discussion?

An instructor I had claimed that when you apply for a job in the multimedia tech industry (video production, audio production, radio production, animation, interactive media, and interactive entertainment) there's a special way that a resumé has to be prepared. I was wondering if this is actually true. If so, what's involved. If not, then why in the world would I be told this? Sorry, but I'm a bit confused. ^^;;

Well instead of making a work experience resume, you would want to prepare it so that it reflects your skills and qualifications.

For example, instead of listing your jobs, list your experiences, and provide deatials on your certifications. If you held any jobs or have any awards that relate to this, you list those too. But you should not list irrelevant things such as being a stock boy or a fry cook.

I hope that was clear enough lol.

No, this is not my resume. It's a good example from the interweb for a fake person.
It's for a position in Web Design, but it's easily applicable to any Multimedia position...

Having a portfolio is incredibly important. A resume gets you in the door, and your portfolio gets you through the interview. There are career specialists (especially at art colleges) which will critique your portfolio and resume and let you know if you have what it takes :').

Hint: No one is impressed with RMXP games, 9 times out of 10, unless the game is freaking brilliant-looking, and I'm talking all custom design, all custom artwork, sprites, music, etc. I knew a dude at my art college who got a job at EA (as a Game Tester, not great, but it's a foot in the door) for showing off a demo of an RM2K3 game that was gorgeous and 100% custom. But he also had a drop-dead portfolio of 3D design, too, so it's hard to say which was the clincher.

Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, for the portfolio: Don't show off anime stuff! It is so cliche nowadays that even expertly drawn/colored anime stuff is frowned upon.

I totally agree with Venetia on this, try to document other pieces of work that isn't as flamboyant as anime. Interviewers also like to see the work up to the final piece (the napkin drawing, then the lining and then the final image).

Custom/original material is a big must.
