Most touching moments in video games.

Obviously these are SPOILERS, and probably large ones, so please put them in spoiler tags. I can't help but think there may be a thread about this already somewhere, but I looked cursorily and couldn't find it, so if you know...

Anyway, I'll start!

I gotta say that the Celes segment at the beginning of the World of Ruin is one of the most touching moments in any video game ever that I can think of. The minigame where you tried to save Cid and probably failed went on for too long imo, but I guess that helped the atmosphere in a way. But yeah, his death and Celes' suicide attempt were really sad. :( You could really feel the utter despair of being left alone in the World of Ruin with the only other living person you cared about now dead. FF6 put its characters through way more shit than any other FF or indeed most video games, and it really paid off in emotional impact.

Just thought of one off the top of my head.

The ending. Damn, all I can really say is it was AWESOME. Being stolen of all your powers and then slowly getting them back, then finally kicking Yami's ass with all the people's belief in you. This is sort of a mix between touching and awesome, just because it was pretty moving (or at least in my opinion) by seeing all those people have a change of heart. Also, the whole game is about helping others, so...

I was coming in this thread thinking the first couple of replies would have aeris in them

thanks for never proving me wrong guys

also peri its not that hard to keep cid alive :(
Hi, I am a spoiler, please use me!

Valkyrie Chronicles:

When Isara dies. I guess what made it sad was the timing and how it happened. It just sort of happened. Even though it was foreshadowed and stuff like that it still just happened sort of like in an instant. And she was one of the nicest characters out there i guess and more of an innocent person getting killed then anything else.

Moog, it is if you don't know how to do it. I didn't the first time I played the game. Also it's kind of a PITA and takes a long time.
I agree, tbh I thought that was supposed to happen until I looked at a guide later :(

Megaman Legends 1 and 2:

man both of them were pretty great tbh. The endings were really just that cool, although ending for 1 was a fair bit strange with the mother and data and killing off all carbon based lifeforms on that island or whatever it was. The voice acting was just perfect and great for 1, 2 was a bit meh. Ending for two was pretty great too, with Megaman waiting to be rescued by both the good and bad guys, and the hilarity of them working together. Maybe it was just nostalgia for me :P

I'll have to support Perihelion on this. The game might be two decades old, but there's kids been born all the time which have probably never even seen a Super Nintendo in their lives. Who knows, maybe one day the might want to play FFVI.

The point where the Boss dies. Surrounded by a field of flowers, having finally bested your mentor in combat, she hands you the Patriot rifle and tells you to finish her off. The music is a piano rendition of the MGS2 theme, something that wasn't brought back in 4. It's an incredibly touching cutscene, and then the black bars of the widescreen push up and you're left there, holding the rifle to her forehead and looking away, waiting for you to press square. I cried, and continue to every time.

GTFO QUEER

when seth dies, lance loses his memory, hamlet dies, slavery etc. the whole game pretty much

IMHO, I don't think that we should be TOO concerned with spoilers on games THAT old and THAT well-known!!!

toadstool said, "Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!"

poor girl :(
I lol'd.

Anyway,

I know I mention ECCO a lot, but the point in the first level where you lose all your dolphin brethrens was HUGE for me :(((( poor fishmammals :((((

And
I licked the very taint of the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series. The moment when Raziel finally relents, and accepts his fate to be trapped in the sword, so Kain (his sworn nemesis throughout) could defeat the Elder God---It made my heart drop. I had like 6,000 gamerboners for Raziel. That was rough :( (but well-written).

AND
The death of Eli.

Fuck.

Fucking Advisor brainbug piece of shit.

God damn it.

VALVE RELEASE HALF LIFE 3 ALREADY
GOODGOD JUST DOOOOO ITTTTTTTTTTTTTT

I can't properly write about any specifics, but if anyone wants to hop onto an emotional roller coaster that takes you for a ride then leaves you sitting there not sure what to do with life, go play through Chrono Trigger.

I have to agree as well. I couldnt figure out how to do it, and i had the fricken player's guide sitting RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF~

Okies, I don't know if it's touching, but it made me shed a few tears. I'm weird like that. :/

Zidane, Garnet, Steiner and Vivi are on the cargo ship and the Black Waltz knocks all the Black Mages off the ship. Vivi is staring at them as they fall and die. When I was younger, I cried during that scene because I like Vivi and hated it when he was sad...

These aren't sad at all, but they were poignant for me in a rather embarrassing way!

(the thread is about "touching" moments ... it doesn't necessarily mean sad, right?)

No one else seems to like him all that much, but i liked Alistair a lot. I mean, yeah ok, he's very mary sue'd, and his personality was a BioWare cliche (Carth clone (but better)), but for some reason, he became just one of my favorite VG characters ever. He had the cutest/most loveable dialogue I've seen executed in almost any game.

Anyway, the little scene where he stops your char and gives her the rose was rather endearing. He gets all embarrassed and tries to play it off with a joke. I thought it was a rather touching scene, in a sweet way :)

... Oh god I'm a girl, sorry

I played through this 3 times, and my favorite "romance" was when I played a chick, romancing Juhani.

She never outwardly reciprocates, and it takes a loong time to befriend her. But if you keep prodding, she eventually starts getting tongue-tied and obviously enamored, but is uneasy about it.

I don't remember all the details of the scene, but the dialogue you do w/ her when she finally admits sharing a forbidden flame for your char is cute as hell HOLY FUCK socute.

Ugh secret insecurities are just adorable to me

Why are they so damn endearing :<
