Hey, this is the main character for my game. I need some critisisms for him, to see how I can make him better. Something about him doesn't seem right to me.

Note: His eyes are supposed to be like that. He's supposed to have beedy, distant eyes.

Here's the latest update. tell me what you think

Something in the face don't seem right... my guess is that Tan goatee thing hanging from his chin. It looks a little weird to me.

My biggest advice if it is rtp is to make the eyes look like the other rtp sprites. It will really clash with eyes like those.

Goatee? He has no goatee! If you're looking at the side sprites, that's the hair on the other side of his head.

This is very poorly constructed the color palette and the actual technique of character design and movement clash. I recommend taking the time to read some spriting tutorials. As stated above the eyes are a poor decision on your part, they should be changed. The walking animation is somewhat odd to me as well. Also is this supposed to be a male or female character? I honestly can’t tell: that’s very bad on your part. The side view hair doesn’t really match the front view. The highlights and shading appear to be placed randomly. You've got a lot of things you need work on here especially considering your wishing to match the rtp.

You've given me a lot to think about there. Thankyou very much. Here's what I'm going to do.

-I'll give changing the eyes a go. Just making them smaller from the other RTP characters.
-Shading the hair better.
-Changing the side-view hair.
-Moving the hair at the sides of his face in the front-view back a bit. They conceal his face too much.
-Giving him a 5-o-clock shadow, to make it clearer he's a guy.
-I've also realised that his body doesn't match the front on the side and back. They're too fat.
-Possibly making the jacket darker.

Wow holy crap! You improved so much. I'm sorry I just had to say that lol. It looks MUCH better now. I guess all you needed was a little feed back huh. I really like how this came out now. Very good. Let's see the zoomed out version sometime.

Aw thanks. Well, that IS why I came here after all :P

EDIT: Say, can anyone give me any tips for the hair at the back? I can't seem to shade it better and more realistically.

EDIT2: Okay, I went and did the others. Somehow, the side-view ones didn't turn out as well as the front-view ones did. Oh wellz. Here it is anyway:

What I usually do when I sprite hair is look at a reference sprite. Then you can kinda see how things are and adjust them acordingly. What your problem on the side view is that it's too close to the template. Hair kinda spills outward. Like it's flat against his forehead. On the back view you are stranding it too much rather than making is shaded more as a whole. Some of the lines seem kinda random to me as well. Take a look at some back for the rtp and I think you'll get what I mean. You don't have to to each piece but do it more in clumps.

Thanks. I'll get right on that. The only problem is that I don't want his hair to look too neat. It's supposed to ragged and untidy.

EDIT: Alright, I tried that. How's it looking?

If you want his hair ragged and untidy, try making the outside fan out a little. Look at the water elemental's hair. I know it's kind of hard to see, but that will give you an idea for untidy hair. Or you could look at some on Naramura's sprites. He's the guy with the really cool battlers floating around everywhere.

http://naramura.kdn.ne.jp/

Go here and click on the material link. There will be a bunch of links in japanese. Click on the second one. The five character faces that are on top there have great examples of shaggy hair. Just click on the face and their battler, face set, and charset will appear.

P.S. Sorry this is a kind of long post.

The shading on the back is better but you could still tweak it a little more as far as the highlight isn't really all that gradual. Get some more shades closer to that to blend it in more so it isn't so terribly sharp. If you need to make the hair more untidy it isn't the actual shading that does that but rather the outline. Don't make it so straight and neat. I see you played with the bottom edge of it but the sides could be played with. Also don't go too crazy with detail on a sprite. Remeber you are simplifying what they look like as compared to a detail with a drawing. It's increadibly small so don't try to shove everything in there. Getting much better. :)

I must say that you have been improving a lot. Just keep at and you will eventually get something that is truly great, just don't give up.

You know, I think the hair looks good as it does now. I am right or deluded?

Also, is here anything else that can be done to improve this?
