This is a "STAND ALONE" game. Just install and play!

Short plot description:

Treasure hunter Vain Nesohc has just returned after a five year expedition to South Africa to find he has a small inheritance awaiting him. His uncle Geoff, a reclusive eccentric man has left Vain a small house in Antarctica. Also, aside from a small amount of money he was left a short letter. The letter describes how the house was build by himself to cover what he thought was an entrance to a ancient underground temple. Possibly full of very valuable artifacts. That was it, aside from map directions on how to find the place. After breaking for about 2 weeks Vain sets off to Antarctica in search of this place that could put him on easy street for the rest of his life. Thanks uncle Geoff.

Main game:

This game is a horror themed puzzle adventure. There is no fighting in this game at all. The concept behind it is to try and scare the player. Can this be done? You'll have to play to find out.

The first chapter should take anywhere from 35 minutes to 1.3 hours depending on how fast you solve the puzzles, and once completed your save game is used for chapter 2. A score will also be tallied, every time you die in the game you will gain one point. So the object is to have as little points as possible by games end.

* Listen carefully. There are audio clues in the game. *
* Look at everything. You never know what you'll see or find. *

Looks pretty interesting. I like the idea of there being no fighting in the game; hopefully you can pull this off well. I'm in Calculus class right now so I'll have to wait til I get home to play it :)

Yes. I hope it's good as well. It started as a project to simply refresh my mind and continue on my main project. Originally there was no story at all, but a little story developed (is still). But the main goal was to create a eerie atmosphere in a 2D game. And I don't mean simply making people jump, that wears off fast. What I'm trying to do is keep players on the edge of their seat so to speak. And making them jump is only 25% of that. I have to create a atmosphere where the player always thinks something may happen. I hope I pulled it off.

That painting of the baby is very creepy. I haven't played this yet, though I will make sure I do, but does the face perhaps move in any way? If so, that would be rather creepy. That face just bothers the heck out of me.

I notice you said that the house is built in Antarctica. That's a bit strange, I hope it makes sense that there is plumbing and whatnot in there.

By the way, The idea of a hidden Temple hidden by a house reminds me of HP Lovecraft's stories "At the Mountains of Madness" and the one about Rats in the walls. (I believe it was called "The Rats in the Walls" but I can't completely remember.) Have you read either?

I'm surprised this didn't get more replies.

I downloaded it and it looks good. It definitely has that creepy vibe to it, though I haven't been really creeped out yet.

I got up to the part where you read the plaque that tells you about the maze. I tried everything I could think of, but I have no idea what to do. The plaque reads "First right then down will navigate the maze."

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the rest of this demo and whatever else you might release on this game in the future.

Erichermit: The game is based on lovecraft stuff, although not directly. Good of you to notice the similarities. I'm glad people still read that stuff. The game itself in a certain area actually contains direct lines from one of his books.

NeoSamurai:

It is a basic description of how to get past the repeating rooms part. The main clue that confuses everyone is that the plaque says right. Now, when in the repeating rooms remember that the direction for you (The player) would actually be left, because your top down view is diffrent from the character in game.

Anyhow everyone. Thanks for the comments. Keep in mind that not much of the story will be revealed in the first chapter. But one exists. However cliche it may be. lol

I actually ended up figuring it out. Thanks for the help anway.

As a matter of fact, I just completed the game. It actually got a lot more scary (and a little jumpy) as I continued. That part with the recording was pretty freaky. :P

I think you did a nice job. But are you really going to keep the default menu? I assume you aren't, but it seems a little unprofessional to keep it that way (since the game doesn't use stats, skills, etc.)

Overall, nice job, man. I think you accomplished your goal in this chapter. I'm looking forward to the next one. :)

And it didn't seem to matter whether the story was cliche or not. It kept me on the edge of my seat.

Edit:

I just need to really emphasize how much this game freaked me out, man. I'm still feeling jumpy. And there were parts that made me nearly jump out of my seat and scream "Holy shit!". I mean, seriously...you've got something good going on here. :)

Based on Lovecraft you say? Well then! I love this game already!

By the way, this game is terrifying..

When that painting turned into skeletons I felt like jumping out of my skin

I had to stop after I got to the kid's room. It's too scary for me and I'm just an extremely jumpy person. Maybe I'll try again if I'm really bored and need to be surprised, but the phantom rushing by me and that weird chanting that increased in volume and I'm done lol. Everywhere I go and every door I open I worry what's behind it. XD

I guess mission accomplished. lol
May I post some of you guys comments on the main posts. Maybe I should put a warning. lol. Naa, that would be strange. Thanks for the feedback thus far everyone. Greatly appreciated.

Haha, I got fucked up mentally when I entered the childrens room. The BG and that face flinging across the screen scared the skin offa me :P

Damnit, I wish I could get my Dell sooner than next week, because I really want to play this. The mapping isn't much to look at (although I like how your walls are inconsistent in style -- that should lend itself to the atmosphere pretty well,) but that's not important -- I love the idea of games that focus on atmosphere above all else. I'm generally easy to freak out (unless I find myself in a certain mood, in which case I could leap off a bridge without being frightened,) but hopefully this game will be worth the two years off my life it will cost me.

Miek I could jump off a bridge without being scared. As long as I know theres decent water below me. And that I'm not belly flopping.

This reminds me of 'the white chamber'. (Not the White Chamber, the white chamber, made by Studio Trophis.)
And because of that I'm too wussy to download. i_i

Rooms covered suddenly in flesh is creepy. ._.

I tried it again, my legs are shaking. I can AT BEST do like 5 rooms, then the stuff gets to me. The 2nd kid room with the blood in the walls is creepy. I feel like those hooks are there for him to get... gutted. Lol.

Wow...

I thought you were all just a bunch of sissies getting scared by an RMXP game, but this is some really scary stuff. Especially with that skeleton picture.

I have, sadly, become stuck.
I am in the room where you step on the switch and the player remarks that something is being pulled back. I take a step and wham cannonball. How do I get to the chest?

Yggy;
To get past the cannon, you need to get the empty sack from the chest in the stable. Then, fill the bag up with the rust colored liquid in the room that you need to use the torch in. Weigh the switch down with the filled up bag, and you're in.

Anyways, that was a very good game, I was really scared, and probably the scaredest I've been in a long time. Way to go, The Man. Looking forward to Chapter 2...
