Lunarea's sprites

Awesome. I'm seeing a loot of groovy HK sprites lately. As for the hair. You probably don't have to use 6 colors. I find that less is more on sprites unless you need the additional colors for shiney highlights. But it does look btter with the new contrast. I really like the outfit she's wearing, though I think the upper curve of the bill on the hat is a little shakey.

These are gonna be great once they're finished ^^ I need to get back to making some HK's myself ^^

most professionals limit their palette to 16 colors, at least back in the day. It may have changed recently, but even Golden Sun's sprites use about 16 colors.

Updated with one more sprite.

I will now try to focus on finishing the walking poses and perhaps a few other poses for those sprites. I will update again with the results :)

The latest sprite looks nice, as always. My only concern would be the perspective of her lower half. It's just not right. Still, a nice sprite :)

I often find 16-color sprites to be kinda flat. Even if the detail is incredible (as it is in GS), these sprites are a lot bigger and should thusly bear more color.

Typically, per color, I try for 3-5 shades of each. 3 for duller textures (clothes), 4 for medium textures (skin), and 5 for shiny textures (hair). Of course I break my own rules constantly :'P, it's just sort of a good rule to start with and break occasionally.

I can't see color detail too well on this monitor at work but from what I can tell, the hair has improved. :')

Yet another sprite. This time, I tried my hand at a male sprite:

I'm not sure if the end result looks pillow-shaded, but I was going for a more rounded/looser clothing (if that makes sense).

C&C are welcome, as always :)

I really like the shading, it has a pop-up feel. D: Unlike small RTP sprites, these seem like they can be animated into a cartoon or something.

Just a small update:

I finished the other directions for the first sprite:

I will work on animating them next.

C&C are welcome :)

Well, the background of the sprite is transparent, so depending on your forum skin, it may or may not look strange.

The placement of the scarf is probably what's making it look that way. But I like where she is, and messing with it too much would make her lose her curves. I guess I can mess with it some more.

Edit: Thanks Tassadar!

The new frames look great as always. :> The only thing I can think of is that for the side-way ones, the bottom part of the skirt feels slightly flat, where the legs should be. But when I look at it again it seems fine, heh.

Major Update:

Full sprite sheet for the first sprite is done! If there are no major glaring mistakes, I will upload it to the DLM.

I'm sorry, I see a glaring mistake :'(

The hair. It still looks like it's two shades. Near-black and near-brown. I think there are more shades but they're so close I can't tell. It makes the hair look very flat, especially in the back-view. Not shine-wise, but as if she had a scaley plate of some sort mounted to her head. Okay not that drastic, I just can't think of a better analogy ATM.

You don't need to outline every clump of hair, I know how tempting it is to do that. If her hair is more "afro" or dredlock-y in texture and isn't very shiny, you can exemplify this with only outlining the outermost dreds, then make the outline (radiating inward) lighter shades. It'll give the appearance of depth.

But her sarong and everything is ADORABLE. I wish I had an outfit like it IRL <3.

@ Venetia:

Thanks!

I had a lot of trouble with the back view because I really wanted her hair to be defined (into dreads or clumps). I've got an alternate version that has more shading in the hair, though it's probably not quite there yet:

I'll have to look into how to sprite the hair a little more. I've got something pretty specific in mind, so I'll have to get some reference material.

Does the movement look okay? I've never done a moving sprite before, so I hope the clothes look like they should.

The hair in that revised version has over 100 colors :'0

I grabbed a frame of the "back" and edited the hair a little (but DANGIT I cropped off the top 2 pixels ... Oops)

I reduced the number of hair colors down to 10 and made the outline varying shades of the darkest shades of the hair, instead of the dark, dark greys you were using. It still looks a little too shiny to be dreds and I think the outlying outlines could be a little lighter still, but that's what I meant before about lightening the outline, radiating inward.

:thumb: But the clothes are right-on!!!!

edit: Oops, wait, she loses her big bracelet in the 2nd and 4th "face down" frames.

Look at the wrists in the background, they're bare, and you'd definitely see them then. The foreground wrists should atleast have a 1-pixel-wide outline of a bracelet there, since it's a swing and not a head-on punch-perspective.
