Faraday died because he was always going to die. He believed that he could change things, and the fact that he tried to change them ensured the predetermined outcome. It's the finale in a nutshell.
The inverted scene was there dramatically - it was a refusal to give the season an end: a cut to black is a statement "this has ended", they were keeping it open ended. Hard to explain, but it was a cool trick.
I think Locke saw the Smoke Monster. He just thought it was beautiful. I think "Esau" and the Smoke Monster are one and the same, and the "Download" thing the Monster appeared to do to Eko, and Juliet and Kate was done to Locke during those moments.
There *can't* be a reboot. There just can't. It just waves away a five season long plot to murder Jacob. It's far too late in the game for such an half-point revamp - although we might see it, and it might occur nearer the end of the Season as a sort of story resolution.
