Light Glow Effects! No Scripts!

Okay, I stumbled upon a very handy little feature a few weeks ago that I dont think many people know about.

It is the option to make things like fogs and charsets Add or subtract their colors from whatever is behind it.

Adding makes them lighter, while subtracting makes them darker.

After I figured this out, I began making a charset that would place a glow around a fire, or a lamp or something like that.

I tried a lot of different things, and then eventually came out to what I am about to show you.

Here is the before and after picture;

See the difference? ^_^

I have included a demo on how to use these files in connection with Near Fantastica's Particle engine.

What you see in this image is only one frame of a animation that looks so good when it is not a still image!

Please, download the demo and check it out for yourself.

Here is the image for the glow, (remember, in the graphic chooser for the events, remember to set this event to a 150 opacity and a blending mode of "Add".)
This image was resized when I placed it into photobucket, because it is larger than 1 megabyte in size.
Here is the link to download it, or you can just download the Demo ;)

One thing you need to know about these effects... when making the event which has the graphic in it, place the event 2 tiles under where you need the glow to be, and set it to "Always on top, and Through and Stop Animation."
There is another glow as well, and it is blue for blue/white lights.

Enjoy, and please credit me if used!

Now this is awesome. Just the sort of thing I was looking for. I'm not sure if it's on the right section either.

Why wouldnt this be in the resource analasis section?
This could possibly be defined as an event system... I guess... but then again it is not... ^_^ I would rather it stay here though, unless a mod has to move it ;)

Oh... mah... gawd...
*stares at the pwetty lights*

Beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous.

EDIT: I found a bug. Whenever you select "Turn on glow/ glow and partiles", and then turn them off, then turn them on again, something really weird happens. It looks like the bright version of the lamp/fire/whatever overlay moves up a bit; if you repeat it enough, the bright torch lamp eventually goes off-screen. Here's a screenie of what I mean (this is after about 5-6 cycles):

Sure, it's minor, but it's easily noticable. I think.

Dont use my switch, make your own.

That was just for the demo. ^_^

They wont move if you set them up right, it might be an error with their move route or something... If you make your own it would work, I guess I just didnt sit there long enough to see that :D

Sorry.

Glad you all like it though!

I will upload them to the DM in a minute.

EDIT Yeah, the reason for them moving up is bacause I think I didnt stop them from moving...
The second you load the map, they will move up really fast to take their right place (because you cant have 2 events on the same thing, you move one onto the other really quickly)

and I guess it keeps moving... ^_^

Every time you turn on that switch, they move up.

Simple fix...
Dont use a switch in your game :)

These look great. And, for those who want to see it in action beforehand:

Your welcome! I'd have made it larger, but the 640x480 version I made was about 1.2 megabytes. The one I posted is actually smaller in file size than the big picture in the first post!

Yeah! It's awesome! :2thumb:
But when I tested it, the charset of the light followed me during a map scroll...
Do you know how to fix this?

:D can you do dark clouds and under it some lightning thuder effects :D
well its just a thought of mine ^_^ but it would be preety cool doh :D like the ones usualy found in anime's hehe

^_^ is it ok for me to use this to my game too? tnx so much ^_^

A quick note...
And a question...

Anyway, I'm interested in how the glow events move? Is it in the particle engine script, or did I just miss it?

Also, You will notice that in the demo the only type that doesn't work is when you use the glow and change the effect of the urn as well...
A way around this (to stop them from moving up) is changing a few things...

Updated demo:
http://www.box.net/shared/mo5xv57gx7

Be sure to look at the setup events for the pages as well... that's what moves the glowing urns to where they should be...
Let's see... also, I removed the move path and just changed it to set event location...
I suppose you could put the set event location calls in the event that it being moved, but either should work.
Hope this helps...

Don't bother giving me credit... I really didn't come up with this...

edit:
This should also fix your problem, LosAngeles

Thank you Moriarty!:D
But I just noticed that a script is the problem for this movement! Just have to find out which one;)
Then it should hopefully work.

EDIT: Got it! It was the Anti-Lag script by NearFantastica. Odd...But now it works...
