Lets DEBATE about DEBATES

True sorcerer? The only True Sorcerer(TS) is God.

And you dare challenge clerical magic? We can do more than healing spells, sir. Summons play a large role in our arsenal and you will see the Great Truth(GT) when an army of angels is summoned from the clouds upon you.

I really think that is a lot of hogwash sir. It's one thing to follow a religion but to believe that you can summon your false divine messengers to your aide is just preposterous. On the other hand, I don't think you would stand up to a well placed arcane projectile(DO NOT DOUBT THESE, I HAVE SEEN IT DONE. while I can't perform them myself just yet, they are completely real and VERY serious). They do quite a bit of damage to your weak human skin.

I'm getting tired of your holier-than-thou posturing. This is just so annoying to deal with... I don't want to put up with you anymore...

This is it.

I am preparing a curse for you right now. I hope you like a bit of skink bile, toad warts and bat liver because that's all you'll be eating for the next few days, vomiting them first, of course.

So I was poking around The Symposium and I was looking at all of the major threads and I noticed that every single one of them ended in a flame war between two people.

So my question to you is can a Debate EVER END? I mean when will someone ever admit defeat? What does it take to move someones core beliefs on subjects such as abortion, faith, and even science.

How much evidence is required for you to change your mind about something, or are we all going into arguments with the desire to prove people wrong?

EDIT: Is it possible to learn something from the person you are debating and if so please share!
I'm not an active poster of the symposium but I'll say what I know. I think debates can end once we notice we're just making the same points over and over again. I don't know if anyone admits defeat but I know I do. If I don't have anything good to say to defend myself and/or my position, I admit defeat. To me, there's no point in going on and on about something even though you know you're beat. My two cents.

It depends on who is debating.

If you have a strong Christian who is good with words and has been brought up to be Christian, and taught the bible enough for him to recite every single word, then he will debate forever until someone admits he is right.

If you have a weak vegetarian who has no real reason to be vegetarian other than he wants to be, is not very good with words, then he'll fail.

If you have the strong person and the weak person arguing, the debate will end and the strong person will most likely win.

If you have a weak and weak person, someone stronger will step in and win.

If you have though both strong people fighting each other, they reach a stalemate and the debate will only end when one of them finally decides it is too late and logs off.

Note: I'm just using those two as examples. The strong person could be an avid footballer, a PETA member, a scientologist, anything, as could the weak person.

I disagree with everything everyone has said here.

Har, har.

(Sorry.)

But whatever, debate is debate, and it usually is between two people. Some folks're just opinionated. Some like to joke and others don't get it. You only suck at the Internet if you can't enunciate your thoughts and if you take what people say personally.

A debate is just an exposition of ideas. Not a competition to see who wins, as probably not many people will change its opinion based off a debate. And I think that what makes a debate turn into a hell is people coming around playing funny and repeating it all over, the use of sarcasm isn't wrong. But keep saying the same thing over and over will make you look like you really mean it, even if you try to be the funny guy.

Exposition of ideas and exchange, that's a debate, most people usually learn from it, some others don't and some others mess around XD

It's unlikely that someone will change their opinion during a debate, but once you've learned how someone else has arrived at their opinion, it makes it more likely that you might change your mind later. As I see it, people have beliefs and opinions that those beliefs lead to. If you understand how someone has reached an opinion, but you disagree with some fundemental belief that it leads from, then you won't agree with them. But if then, later on, you have some experiance which changes that belief, then it might all turn around and you would agree with them.
